I'll second that, the paint job quality on Rich's airplane is super!

Les, Gene Kear did a great job on my airplane. He is in Colorado Springs
(00V). Give me a call at 303-429-5213 and I can give you more info.

Subject: | flush mount transponder antenna (Long with advertisement) |
--> Rocket-List message posted by: LesDrag@aol.com
After bugging Bob Archer (Sportcraft Antenna) for over three years about his
not having a flush mount transponder antenna, he finally admitted that there
was one already available. It is also a MIL-SPEC antenna. And he had one, if
I was interested.
The 4" long transponder antenna that is normally mounted on the bottom of the
fuselage probably weighs an ounce or two. It is easy to install. Which is
fortunate. When washing the bottom of the aircraft, it takes about two bumps
to break off the transponder antenna. I started bugging Bob about a flush
mounted antenna after replacing one of the standard transponder antennas.
The MIL-SPEC transponder antenna is flush with the bottom surface of the
airplane. That's good.
It requires a 8 3/8" diameter hole in the bottom skin to flush mount the unit.
That's not so good.
Not everyone wants to cut a 8 3/8" diameter hole in the fuselage bottom skin.
To mount the antenna requires an 0.032 spacer and two 0.040 doublers with the
same 8 3/8" hole, and a 0.040 min. mounting plate with a 7" dia. hole.
And the antenna weighs 2 3/4 pounds.
The MIL-SPEC antenna requires an adapter to use the BNC coax connector.
If you have read this far, and are still interested in the antenna, I found
the following:
There is a newer design MIL-SPEC antenna that weighs 12 ounces.
Unfortunately, the company wanted $2,000 each, if purchased in quantities.
I located new manufactured MIL-SPEC antenna's available (2 3/4#) for $600
each, if purchased in quantities.
I managed to locate (outside of the USA) about 20 new surplus MIL-SPEC
antenna's (made in the USA, of course). And I made a quantity buy of the BNC
adapter.
I have new surplus MIL-SPEC flush mount transponder antenna's with the BNC
adapter available for $105 each plus shipping and handling (and tax in
California).

Jim,
How much do the antennas you are advertising weigh, and how big a hole in
the fuselage is required?
Thanks.

Sounds like a lousy reason to cut a giant hole in your plane and add lots of
extra weight. Several have mounted the regular little antenna in the
wheelpant.

Hi Russ,
I don't understand where the small antenna is mounted in the wheel pant. In
front of the big aluminum wheel and steel adapter, or behind the big aluminum
wheel and steel adapter?
The goal on my HR2 is to install all the antennas with no drag and optimum
antenna performance. I already admitted that it was a mistake to bug Bob Archer
about having a flush mount transponder antenna. One exists.
It all comes down to a compromise. We each make our own choices.
I know of a HR2 with the transponder antenna mounted in the right wing root
forward of the main spar. He is counting on the signal getting out through the
rubber wing root seal.
After flying to Sun-N-Fun and Oshkosh in my RV-3 this year, I wanted to make
certain that I could be seen on radar. Even my puny 243 cu inch LOM engine
allowed me to cruise at 160 mph at 17,500'. This puts me in conflict with the
jet traffic in the LA basin.
