I used doubler strips to stregthen the HS forward spar. I think I used several 0.040 or 0.032" strips as opposed to angles. I used the strips because the angles must have one leg trimmed off to fit under the skin. Anyway, same idea that Greg had, just a slightly different approach. The strips were 1 1/4" wide and I reinforced the bottom of the front HS spar as well as the top. I also added the VS forward spar doubler just like Greg did. Don't get too carried away with adding metal though. Those AN3 bolts (3/16") that hold the forward HS to the longerons can't be made any bigger unless you do some serious (and unnecessary) redesign work. And remember to CAREFULLY plan how this all must fit together or you'll make it impossible to fit the VS to the HS to the fuselage longerons!!! Doh! All moved into my new hanger at Stead field and pushing ahead full steam (again) on building my F-1(#20). Almost have enough parts to put together an airplane. Question: I have completed an RV-4 tail to John's plans (still have to move bottom rib of VS..ooops) but am interested in beefing up the HS spar. Anyone done this? Seems to me that the Fwd spar is a little thin and could do with a douber in the middle and/or a couple of angles at the inboard ribs. I know there are some smart guys out there with ideas, just remember to make them "Marine-proof". Thanks in advance. Semper Fi Chris "Screech" Parkhurst Maj USMC Subject: RE: Rocket-List: -4 tail mods?? --> Rocket-List message posted by: "u2nelson" The RV-4 horizontal is indeed in need of some beefing up. The forward spar is week at the top in compression, a loading situation that is not normally encountered, but with enough speed and some negative G, like in turbulence, it is possible. The failure mode is buckling. To fix this add a standard extruded angle to the top of the spar, spanning the forward spar from rib to rib. Once the spar is inside the ribs, and under the skin there is no problem with buckling. You can pick up the rivet pattern of the planned rivets. The only other area I beefed up was the forward spar of the vertical, doubling it with a piece of .032 and extending up a couple inches into the skin area, this was primarily for extra sheer resistance against the attach bolts. I'm looking for pics of Rocket firewall penetration points in particular for throttle cables, fuel line, main electrical line, hot and cold ventilation hoses and brake lines. I'm also interested in where guys are locating the inverted oil valve. I've viewed all the pics on Vince Frazier's site and gained a feel for it but I would like to see more to avoid boxing myself in. Tom Martin, I think with your experience, you probably know the best way to plum a Rocket, can you help? Thanks, Jim Stone Louisville ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 04:09:58 PM PST US From: Morocketman@aol.com Subject: Rocket-List: Patterns for Sidewall Upholstery! --> Rocket-List message posted by: Morocketman@aol.com Do Not Archive Does anyone have sidewall upholstery templates/patterns that they would not mind sharing? Also patterns for making carpet cutouts? I have a Harmon Rocket II, and would very much appreciate your previous efforts. Any info on rear seat armrests would be helpful as well. Thank you very much, Les Featherston N206KT's and flying past 50 hrs. Anybody out there have a positive or negative comment on the storage compartment behind the passengers head in the turtle deck? Can you provide design help or drawings to assist in the construction? Is it worth the effort? Thank you very much, Les Featherston N206KT Flying and could not be happier with the airplane. Lovinit!
