If you are so inclined, pick a color that coordinates with your external color
scheme and order seat cushions to compliment. A friend of mine flys a beautiful
RV-8 that is painted a goldish bronze color. I think it came from a Buick.
It is very classy.
I've decided to go with kind of a two-tone scheme that I've seen recently at AirVenture.
Front deck and panel will be black, with the rest of the cockpit a
deep tan to match the leather seats. Sounds kind of yucky but it is very sharp
when you see it in person.

The "trunk" speckle paint is surprisingly durable. I tried some scrap
pieces of aluimum a few years ago with the gray based trunk paint and
the pieces still look great after floating around the scrap box. My new
Rocket will get the gray trunk paint this time around. I Mar-Hyde 'ed
the interior of my RV-4....that worked out very well; very easy to
rattle can repair, blends well and nah has the right amount of (non)
gloss.
Check out the RV forum archives too. There is someone that uses hardware
store marblizing paint with a poly clear over spray. My wife tried the
idea on a project she was working on and it looked fantastic.

Look at other airplanes. Decide early on the whole paint scheme for the
plane, or at least the general ideas and colors. Look at car interiors.
If you don't tie it all together you'll be sorry. Find a couple of
aircraft interior guys and look at color combinations of cloth leather
and paint. I remember I was so tired of making decisions on my Rocket
when it came time to paint the fuse interior that I kind of bailed on
the decision (did'nt think it through) and now wish I would have. Don't
get psyched out on the interior. Once the plane is done and flying for a
few months your attention will turn to it again and a good foundation
color is critical to a great interior scheme.
It really is not difficult if you go with some auto inspired
combination. Get a paint color fan deck selector (Home Depot?) and hold
it up to your favorite car interior- get a good match off the major
plastic areas and take it to an auto paint store for a match. Look at
the interiors in cars -how simple the color schemes really are . The
carpets pretty much match the plastic which matches the leather etc. The
IP and door handles may be different but by in large it is all quite
tame. Think about it there's good reason they do it that way. One
exception is the Mini Cooper it has a very sporty interior with a lot
going on but its still not overwhelming. From your base color you can
have them lighten or darken additional colors for the panel, floors etc.
Have them spray out a couple sample chips that you can carry around to
look at fabrics and leathers as you are out and about. Then by the time
you really need to finish the cockpit you'll have some ideas to work
with. It only costs a few bucks more than a standard paint can color and
the quality is much higher. Use acrylic enamel paint with a good etching
primer. Acrylic enamel takes a few days to dry but its wear and chip
resistance is better than quick drying lacquers and base clear coat
systems. The whole flattener bit is good advise too.

What have RV-ers ben using to polish canopies? I have been using Plexus
with good results as a cleaner/polisher. I need to polish out some micro
fine scratches so I am wondering what others are using to do this? At
the AOPA convention this weekend I purchased a Flitz polishing kit.....I
am not thrilled with the results on plastic. I realize that micro-mesh
and other similar companies have a product...I am wondering what else is
out there that polishes out micro scratches and all that. There are
canopies on RV's at Oshkosh that look like Todd just took them out of
the mold-there so clean and scratch free...
