--> Rocket-List message posted by: "Jim Stone" <jrstone@insightbb.com> Men of Rockets, I am about to order my alternator, starter and oil cooler. My research has led me to the following choices. Alternator: B+C specialty has my first choice in the L-60 but Pricey $595., ($409 for the L-40) Plus $228. for the voltage reg. Air-Tec appears to be a good choice and value (350 including regulator), although rumors of questionable business practices by the Owner. Vans A/C has what appear to be a great value, but I have heard it is a rebuilt unit and folks have some problems with them. Starter: B+C offers a great product but two hundred $ more than its' competition. Sky Tec at 7.5 # s and $360. seems like the best choice Air-tec starter is $225. Oil Cooler: Niagra has a great reputation so that is currently my choice. Don't yet know which model. Please feel free to comment good or bad on the above brands or add your own favorites. Also indicate best source to buy if you have one. Thanks, Jim Stone Louisville KY 502 254-3214

--> Rocket-List message posted by: Bob Japundza <bjapundza@yahoo.com> Jim, the bracket that comes with the Niagara alt doesn't work with a 540, at least the part that holds tension. I ended up making my own bracket there. The other part works fine that bolts underneath the case. The alternator they sell is the same as what goes on a 87 Suzuki Samurai. You can buy one of these rebuilt at an auto parts place for about $125 + core, or you can get a brand new one from Niagra for $100 more (outright). That alternator is internally regulated so no need for an external one. I have been flying with this setup on my RV-6 for the last 350 hours, got a replacement upper bracket for free from them because of a bad weld (it cracked after 150 or so hours in service). Other than that I've been a happy camper. I went through two Van's alternators before I had enough. Mark Frederick sells Positech coolers which work well as long as you have the latest version.
