Okay Okay spins pins F4's smores F100'S Bunions!!
Lets hear about rockets and engine out adventures!
It is a real eye opener when yoou pull the throttle all the way back and
leave it there till you reach the runway, I challenge all
you listers with rockets to try that and see what a boat anchor is like!!

Want you to try one thing. Do exactly like you said, establish a good
power-off glide, and then pull your prop ALL THE WAY BACK to a coarse pitch
setting.
The plane will take off like a slick banana peel, and all of a sudden,
you will have a darned good glider on your hands, rather than that rock.
This little exercise will demonstrate just what that prop does to you
power-off.
Another exercise is to determine just where your zero-thrust point is.
After establishing a normal power-off glide, come in with throttle until you
can just feel the drag disappear. That is your zero-thrust point, and is
handy to know when you are shooting a more critical approach. Remember that
until you GET to that point, the prop is DRAGGING, and you have to get
BEYOND that point before the THRUST is effective. If you are shooting any
kind of approach that is demanding of thrust/drag considerations, you would
like to be right at this zero-thrust point so that you can easily and
quickly reach either power or drag, without any delay.

I had to dead stick a Cessna 210 once, and learned that pulling the prop
control to full decrease reduced the descent rate by about half.

Shouldn't on a "standard" CS propeller.
Course pitch happens automatically on the "aerobatic" (counterweighted) CS
propeller with loose of oil pressure.

Does anyone have any experience with problems associated with adding a
ceramic coating to exhaust pipes? Mine have been coated and I was told
last week that they are "junk" and will fail prematurely. This would
not be a good thing. Your inputs will help me decide whether or not to
buy a new set to avoid a reasonable risk.
Thanks,

I have ceramic coated pipes on my 0-360 powered Tailwind and they are fine..
I had them coated because they were fabricated from mild steel tubing and
they needed something to protect them from corrosion...And I wanted the
thermal advantages also. When I had the exhaust done (4 discreet pipes), I
also had the intake tubes done.. My tubes weren't chromed, they were
painted....So, when I had them ceramic coated, I selected a shiny aluminum
finish. They damn near look like chrome.
Bottom line? I don't really have any idea why someone wouldn't want to coat
their exhaust pipes.. That being said, I have Vetterman's SS exhaust system
on my Rocket and I wouldn't want to cover it up as it looks so good just the
way it is..

Tom, I agree, if you fly a tight glider pattern and pretend is has the
glide ratio of flat rock, a dead stick landing is possible and exciting. Bob

Lee--
That's why some people consider you an aviator and not just a pilot.
That's also why I'm getting this stronger and stronger urge to remove
the flaps on the Super 6 and put in full-length ailerons. My 80" C/S
prop is both my transmission and my brake.

In practicing dead stick landings I tried that once with a CFI in the right
seat and he wasn't too happy saying that it messes up my judgment if I am
used to a fine pitch windmilling prop. I thought a full coarse pitch would
buy me some time and the judgment comes from having made landings at various
rates of descent.
Go figure.

I heard that a ceramic coat on the exhaust pipes doesn't allow you to reweld

Tom--
Agreed.
If I'm coming in "standard/precautionary" or whatever, I usually put my
wing tip on the centerline of the runway when downwind and then do a
"circular" turn (180) to final. (While the flight instructors have
their charges about 2 miles away, so they can burn up extra flight time
on the clock). If things are "nervous"--I call an Overhead Approach
and then turn a circular 360 at mid-field--break turn, 4 g's, flaps ,
gear and down to 250 kts--Oh, yeah, we're in RV's now--but I still like
a good smoking' hot Overhead if you need it. Pilots should know how to
do one (it is still a legal maneuver) in place of a straight-in ( tho,
if you need it, call it and tell those ****** bizzjets and stuff to
just get out of the way--that's your right and your privilege as PIC.
Boyd.
Never had a flight problem in my life, it was always the GIB.

You'll have to grind through the coating before you can weld them.

That's correct, Jim, and a nice thought, but how many RVs/Rockets have

Ceramic coatings can be grinded off where you have clearance problems or
where you need to weld a crack.

This is not true. If anything it makes them stronger. It certainly means
heat cycles are not going to factor as much against the metal as the ceramic
blocks so much of the heat. Almost every well funded auto racing teams use
ceramic coatings where their individual rules allow. My race car has the
entire exhaust system coated and I've had no problems. In fact I've
benefited from less heat under the car and a few more ponies at the wheels.
The coating is very thin, weight gain is very small. I intend to coat the
exhaust and intake pipes on my RV6A when I get to the engine installation.

That's correct, Jim, and a nice thought, but how many RVs/Rockets have
counterweighted props, if you can find one that fits?
Boyd
Gary Rudolf has a counterweighted CS propeller on his HR2. (Please check my
grammar, spell check can't.)
It doesn't seem very well known, but MT Propeller provides custom designed CS
propellers.
That's why we use a questionnaire data sheet to take down the customers
information for the propeller and spinner.

Folks,
I am new to the list and aerobatics too. What does 'screwing the pooch'
mean? It's easy figuring 'going splat' but the other one has me floored. You
got that one, didn't you?

Nico--
"Screwing the Pooch' is when you really screw up and the consequences
are "yours" because, what whatever you did is totally your fault.
"Augering in" and "digging a hole" are similar expressions. I don't
know where the "pooch" phrase came from, but it's been around for a
long time. Any one???
