Hey Vince I'm at the same place, having put a NACA vent under the wing - works great for the rear seater, I haven't put anything up front for myself yet, I was trying to run a vent behind the tank and in front of the spar for the fresh air for the front seat, not enough room behind the tank unless you enclosed the whole space and then funneled it into a hose somehow. Did you come up with any other ideas? Starting to get warm here in southern B.C. Tom M. did you go with 1" hoses in the wing root or was there room enough for a bigger size? do not archive Thanks Chris (CFHRK)

I'm not flying yet but have put some thought into this. I have a NACA duct on the bottom of both wings; one for the pilot and one for the PAX (a la RV-8). One of my decision factors is the sad case of another pilot in the northwest that lost his life due to a firewall forward fire. I have heard the evidence showed he had burns on his left leg from the standard RV-8 NACA duct inlet. My option is to have no air inlets aft of the cowl. Besides, as Vince has said "why not enjoy the cool air from the wing NACA ducts anyway?" Larry E. James Bellevue, WA Super Decathlon Rocket under construction

I used a 2" hose but one and a half would be large enough. It will work with glass wing root farings, there may not be enough room it you have the flat metal wrap around farings. It might be possible to put a naca duct on the bottom of the wing root faring but I would be concerned about exhaust and fuel fumes entering the cockpit in that location. From: "ACTIVE NZ - Andrew" <andrew@nzactive.com>
Hi guys. As a long list time lurker from New Zealand... I'm really keen on getting some rear rudder pedals in my Rocket, as my main instructor won't fly with me without them. I apologise if this question has been asked before - anyone know the simplest/easiest (but robust) way to retrofit??? I saw a really nice set on a Rocket in a tiny place in the Sierras, just north of Lake Tahoe, and got the gentleman's contact details, but then stupidly mislaid them. I'll drop in next time I'm fling around the US, unless anyone knows the name of the guy who lives with his Rocket and pilot-wife in a tiny town northwest of Reno by, I'm not sure, maybe 100 miles? I seem to recall he's very close to Sierra Springs. He had a VERY elegant set of pedals, and I'd love to copy them - or see if anyone here has any good suggestions/diagrams/photos. Also, Rocketeers, just repeating my invitation, made a couple of years ago, to some of the coolest flying in the world, down here in New Zealand. I live in Queenstown, which is a must-stop on any NZ vacation anyway. I fly my Rocket off a little farm strip, but we are right next to the Southern Alps, which means some stunning scenery. All Rocketeers are welcome, should you ever be on vacation in NZ - we have a spare room, an HRII, and....well what else couldja need? :) I gather New Zealand's second Rocket has just been built. Our first indigenous one, I guess. Mine came from Carl Wright in Camarillo, and is a very well built aircraft. I've put 500 hours on it since then. And we have another Rocket just being started in a small town in Southland, called Gore. I talked to the builder, and it sounds like he may have run into one or two of the people on this list on a recent reserach trip to the US. He's a very nice guy - John Bowles, I think, is his name - and is well worth helping out. He's already built an RV4, so this isn't his first foray into homebuilding. I'm sure he'll build it well... in New Zealand! Andrew, You might want to check out Jim Winnings' set-up for rear seat rudder pedals. I hear his are nice but have not seen them yet. His phone # is 317-718-3415. I don't have his e-mail but have called him in the past and found him to be very helpful. I don't know how or when, but I'm going to NZ someday. It's one of those "have to do before I die" kind of things. I'm 56 now and can feel the clock ticking. I hope you still have your rocket when I get there. Ivan Haecker rv-4 1458 hrs. S. Cen. Jim/Vince, No arguments here, I live in Central FL where humidity is manufactured and exported! I inspected an RV4 for a friend recently that had the under wing NACA ducts (1 each side) for cockpit cooling. The right side went to a rear eyeball vent in the stickwell, the front had a unique snorkel duct that pointed forward from just aft of the main spar. The airflow inflight was excellent, equal to or better than my setup and even worked on the ground. Also unique was his Grob Sailplane/Extra 300 canopy sliding vent in the front cockpit ala Tony Bingelis' RV3. It also worked very well. Very Cool :) RR --- On Mon, 5/26/08, Frazier, Vincent A <VFrazier@usi.edu> wrote: From: Frazier, Vincent A <VFrazier@usi.edu> Subject: Rocket-List: cockpit cooling Jim, I haven't had Vinces problem on my HR2. My AE buddy stressed location was critical in getting large volumes of cool air, which I do. RR Rob and others, I certainly don't dispute that the wingroot vents get plenty of air. They do. So do the NACA vents on the fuselage sides. However, both of those locations are 10+ degrees F hotter than the NACA scoop under the wing. 10 degrees doesn't sound like much, but when it's already 85F and 90% humidity, it is miserable. Having just returned from vacation and a cross country drive from Los Angeles to Indiana, via Death Valley where it was a comfortable 110F and <10% humidity, I think I can safely assume that it is the humidity that makes Indiana and Kentucky uncomfortable compared to anywhere in the western U.S. or Canada. It gets blazing hot out west, but without the humidity, it's nowhere near as uncomfortable as it gets here. My whole point here is that the underwing NACA scoops are measurably cooler... so why not enjoy the cooler air instead of the hot fuselage air if you're making a change or building anew. It's a mistake that I won't make again! Vince
