I heard about a Velocity crashing into a house and killing the pilot and two
people in the house while trying to land at North Las Vegas. It was the
flight test period as the plane only had 5 hours of flight time. I went on
the Internet to find a little more info. I was shocked to read the comments
of the airport director.

According to Airport Director Randall Walker, this incident is the worst air
accident off the airport grounds in Las Vegas history. Now for the first
time, Walker is publicly calling for more local control over what aircraft
come in and out of airports.
Walker says the airport has no control over what aircraft fly in and out --
there hasn't even been a risk assessment for what kind of risks these
experimental aircraft may pose. But he says he is going to start lobbying to
get Congress to change the law and allow airports to have more control.
But again, Randall Walker says that these kinds of aircraft do not belong in
urban areas.

Prior to his appointment as the director of aviation, Walker was assistant
county manager for Clark County from 1996 to 1997. As assistant county
manager, he oversaw 12 county departments and provided fiscal oversight for
District Court, Justice Court, and all of Clark County's elected officials.
In 1995, Walker served as director of the county's Department of Finance.

I read the complete bio and there was no indication of any aviation
experience. My first question is why do ANTI-AVIATION types, who are not
pilots and have no flying experience, rise up to get airport director jobs?
For example, the new director of airports for San Bernardino County, CA is
not a pilot. My info maybe old, but the Navy had a rule that to command an
aircraft carrier, you had to be a pilot. Might make a good rule for airport
managers.
(Sour grapes alert.)
I might have a chip on my shoulder about this. As the manager of Apple
Valley, CA (KAPV) airport job because available, I was not given a interview
as I didn't have a BA business degree. My Masters Degree in Computer
Science and a BS in Chemistry of course, didn't prepare me to run a airport.
However, I also have twenty years of military experience as a flight safety
officer and Supervisor of Flying.
(Enough sour grapes.)
Seems to me, we need to get EAA and AOPA on this right away before it gets
out of hand.
Please write and call anybody you think can help.

I'm afraid the main qualification for airport managers these days is
the ability to do the bidding of the local city council AND to pull in
as many federal funds as possible. Once they get good at those two,
they suddenly find themselves qualified to pass judgement on what's
good or not, for general aviation at large. Just amazing and just the
kind of thing AOPA and EAA love to sink their teeth into. Go git 'em!

Just as the airport administrator said, pilots just as he is goint to
should contact their local congressional members. NASAO is a group you
should all become aware of. These are the bureaucrats nationwide who
try to maximize their salary and the funds to their respective airport
by restricting selected group of pilot operations. It is ironic that
FAM grants and other federal funds are based on take-offs and landings.
Without GA, many commercial operation airports would cease to exist
because they do not meet the requirement for funds. These are the guys
that increase restaurant costs, gasoline costs, rental car costs,
parking costs and smile as they take their state mandated holidays each
year.
His actions will do nothing to reduce accidents.

Being a pilot does not insure that one has good judgement.
It does when it comes to airport management and operation!
ALL airport managers should be pilots.
