Subject: | Dynon AOA Probe and Static Port Locations |
I'm toying with upgrading my pitot tube to a Dynon with AOA. Anyone
using one of these in their Rocket? How accurate is it and does it help
fly short field operations?
As my static port is currently in my probe, I need to find a new, easy
to install, location for my static ports. Anyone have a good forward
fuselage location that works accurately?

About a year ago, I read that article and then spoke with Les Doudt at
Hartzell, the same guy referenced in the article.
He advised me that as of this past Spring, Hartzell was to have a new
hub that would be modified to allow clocking the prop in the same
manner.
I was all set with a machinist to modify mine but decided to hold off
'til the new prop came out however, I haven't heard if that happened
yet or not. Anyone else?

I purchased the new Hartzell two blade BA. It does not need any special
clocking and it is as smooth as the three blade MT that it replaced. I had
it dynamically balanced at the Hartzell shop when I picked it up. It is an
80 inch prop, looks good and is quite a bit faster, at full power, than the
MT.

Tom,
- Here is the data Les Doud at Hartzell- ran on the 8068D BA blades on
my HR2. I plan on buying one someday soon. Could you send me your photos to
smokyray@rocketmail.com?
Thanks
Smokey
HR2
Rob,
-
I ran two conditions:
-
1.- 8500 ft, 192 KTAS (195 mph indicated), 200 Hp
@ 2400 RPM
-
2.- S.L., 204 KTAS (235 mph), 285 Hp @ 2700
RPM
-
-
The 8068:
-
1. 88.4%, 300 lbs.
2. 88.3%, 402 lbs
-
-
The 8068D:
-
1. 88.9%, 302 lbs.
2. 89.1%, 405 lbs.
-
-
Although the-efficiency/thrust numbers-are close, the blade
loading is more optimal on the "D" twist which should have favorable
installation effects (lower drag).- To my knowledge nobody has tested an
8475J-4 or an 8475D-4 two blade back-to-back with an 8068D.- The only
testing I'm aware of is what I did with Paul Seigel on his F-1 and what Tom
Martin did, both started with an MT prop.
-
The
other (hopeful) benefit of this blade is-I-married it with the DHC-
hub indexing to lower cabin vibration levels.- Based on Paul and Tom's
feedback it appears the new prop is on par with the MT for smoothness.-
Again, only someone testing back-to-back with an HC- prop will be able to
qualify the improvement relative to what we've been selling.
-
Respectfully,
-
