I think what you're missing is the RPM specs from Rotax. As I recall 5500rpm is max continuous rpm. I think 5800 rpm is time limited to 5 minutes. Most people seem to set prop pitch for max of 5500 to avoid the short time rating. --> RotaxEngines-List message posted by: "John M. Goodings" <goodings@yorku.ca> Gentlemen: I don't understand your numbers for the Rotax 912S, 100 HP, gear reduction 2.43:1. I am fairly new to this game, so I go by the book. My Rotax manual says maximum rpm = 5800 on climb-out at full power (80 mph, 1700 ft/min on a cool day); cruise at 5200 rpm. I had the blade pitch set at 19.75 degrees; at full power, the engine reached nearly 6000 rpm when hot; cruise at 5200 rpm was about 105 mph; this amateur-built aircraft has a slow cruise because of its thick airfoil. So I increased the pitch to 19.5 degrees; it now reaches only 5600 rpm at full power; cruise at 5200 rpm is about 110 mph. Presumably, I should decrease the pitch a tad to achieve 5800 rpm at full power when the engine is hot. My point is, it is my understanding that blade pitch should be adjusted to achieve full power at 5800 rpm, and cruise power should be 5200 rpm; it is not good for the engine to run too cool. And yes - avoid the rough spot near 4200 rpm on these engines; it is hard on the gear reduction drive. Some of what I am doing does not seem to be in line with what others are reporting on this Rotax Engines List. Please enlighten me. --> RotaxEngines-List message posted by: "John M. Goodings" <goodings@yorku.ca> This note is primarily an answer to David Joyce. Thank you, David, for your reply to my post. You are right; I made a mistake (one of many, perhaps!). Originally, my prop pitch was 18.75 degrees (not 19.75), and I increased it to 19.5 degrees, causing a drop in DYNAMIC rpm in climb from near 6000 at full throttle (of course, I never ran it over 5800) to 5600. It seems to me that 5600 STATIC rpm should give about 5800 dynamic rpm in flight; this is what I would like to achieve. I believe my airspeed indicator is close to correct, checked against the GPS. I have mounted a pitot tube (under the left wing) which incorporates a static pressure port underneath, scavenged from a Piper aircraft; it has been very satisfactory from day 1. This static pressure port gives correct altimeter readings, as checked against my transponder and encoding altimeter. This avoids a static pressure port on the side of the fuselage; on some aircraft, there seems to be great confusion as to just where to place it! John Goodings, C-FGPJ, CH601HD Zodiac.

I would suggest that you also calibrate your RPM gauge. The Rotax gauges have been known to be off by as much as 20 percent. Use a handheld gauge set for the appropriate number of prop blades and adjust for gear box ratio.

Hi gang! I have a complete Rotax 912 UL engine package that came off of a low time Kitfox V available for sale. It is in excellent condition with only 297 trouble free hours since new. Included along with the engine is the exhaust system, with heat shrouds and carburetor heat airbox, new radiator, oil cooler, oil tank, complete ignition system in a firewall mounted shielded aluminum box, and a GSC ground adjustable three-blade propeller. I do not have a Kitfox mount, but other than that, this package is ready to install and fly. I purchased the package a few months ago with intentions to use on my Just Aircraft Highlander that I am currently building, but have since decided to go with a 125 HP Franklin 4A-235 engine. I am asking $9,000 firm. Cheers! Stan Bearup www.justkitplanes.com Stan@justkitplanes.com (208) 220-0837
