When changing the oil and filter (don't forget to drain the oil that remains in the crankcase via the magnetic drain plug) we add exactly 3 quarts. This puts the level about the middle of the range. The best time to check the precise level of the oil is right after flying the airplane. We do this as part of our standard on post-flight inspection. That way we don't have to rely on the "hear it gurgle" method. After it cools down the level drops and this results in some folks adding more oil when it is not needed. FYI, We had about 100 hours on our last oil/filter change and added no more than 1 pint of oil during that entire 100 hours of flight. Thom in Buffalo
