Just for information on this oil issue I recount what happened to my rotax 912 uls. It developed an increasingly violent vibration between 4000 and 5000 revs that became so rough it would run up through the seat and vibrate my legs. Point is that it turned out to be a spacer in the gearbox had shattered and all the metal ended up in the oil tank which is a separate container. What is remarkable is that all the metal was sucked past the magnet that has been mentioned on the base of the sump and was contained within the bottom of the scavenger tank. This is now an effective way to test to see if any other metal is around by extracting the tank, tipping the oil into a clean container, checking the base of the tank, then putting the oil back as it has only done ten hours since this all occurred. TT for engine incidentally is 578 hours and the cause of the shim breaking up was probably due to the shims in the gearbox being installed the wrong way round. As far as checking the oil and overfilling the tank, if the gurgle has occurred there cannot be any more oil hidden anywhere in a cold engine so that should surely be the best time to check. It also gives an opportunity to feel if the engine is turning over properly before starting?? Regards GT

Yikes, I felt like I was buying parts for my old Continental. A Bent Tube Assy on the Bing Carbs on my 912 broke. I think it was cracked from the beginning. It is a simple piece of tubing about 4 inches long with an inside and outside thread on either end. Cost: $35.53 U.S. Ouch! Tommy Walker in Alabama Do Not Archive

Lockwood article in the EAA Sport Pilot Mag today (it is either the November or December 2005 issue) regarding checking oil level in the 912 when the engine has just been shut down. He said wait 20 minutes for the oil to collect in the crankcase, then turn the prop and listen for the gurgle in the reservoir.... For what it's worth. Listen to Ronnie He says if you flip prop just after shut down, a glowing amber of carbon can ruin your day: http://www.ultraflightradio.com/ Ronnie Smith, South Mississippi Light Aircraft The Rotax 912 series of engines is becoming very common to a lot of light sport aircraft from airplanes and gyroplanes to trikes and powered parachutes. Ronnie talks about how to preflight these engines. Ronnie is also here to answer your four stroke and two stroke light aircraft engine questions. Do you have any engine questions? When the show is live, call your questions in at (888) 514-2100 or you can IM them in on AOL or Yahoo Instant Messenger to UFRadio. South Mississippi Light Aircraft. (5/30/06) Ron Parigoris

Isnt the oil sucked out of the crankcase not pushed out with air pressure?? On another issue I am suddenly having a starting issue and have read that choke on instigates a starting sequence that ensures starting. Does any one know what this sequence or configuration actually is? Starting with no throttle, and full choke has always worked but lately I seem to need more throttle to start, and the last two starts had to turn the fuel cock off and full throttle before it sprang into life. It seems to be rich, but whats changed?? Regards GtBlu
