--> RotaxEngines-List message posted by: "John M. Goodings" <goodings@yorku.ca> After flying our CH601HD with Rotax 912S (100 hours) last weekend, we had occasion to pull the prop through by hand. When pulled quickly, a squeak was heard from the front of the engine; the engine was hot. When we ran the engine again after lunch, the squeak was heard again for the last couple of blade rotations before the prop stopped. We had heard from an expert AME on Rotax engines that a few certified 912S engines had been assembled with an incorrect part in the slipper clutch in the gear box. (The mating surfaces of the clutch hub and the dog gear should both have an angle of 7 degrees, whereas one of the parts in the faulty assemblies had an angle of 0 degrees, meeting the other part at the wrong angle.) There was the possibility that some uncertified engines like ours had suffered a similar fate. Thus, our gear box was opened up by the expert AME; however, the correct parts had been installed. It was reassembled by him (with great care; it had to sit overnight for the correct Loctite sealant to set). When the engine was run approximately 40 hours later, the squeak had disappeared. We would be interested to learn if any other 912S users have encountered this characteristic squeak. If so, were they able to determine a clear-cut cause? John Goodings, C-FGPJ, CH601HD with R912S, Toronto/Waterloo.

--> RotaxEngines-List message posted by: "j. davis" <jd@lawsonimaging.ca> Greetings... Every now and again, when I shut down my Rotax 912 ULS, the prop, normally clockwise rotating from the cabin, will wind down to 0 rpm, and then rotate in reverse (cc) for several revolutions before finally stopping. Is this cause for concern? -- Regards, J. flying: Zenith STOL CH701/912 C-IGGY, 350 hrs. building: Sonex #325, Jabiru 3300/6, 85% completed +-------------------------------------------------------+ | J. Not a good idea to spin oil pump in reverse even 1 revolution according to manual. Call Lockwood in Florida for their opinion how to stop this from occuring. A few ideas from someone not yet flying: Try different gas, perhaps with higher octane. If variable prop try shut down with full course Cool down engine a bit before shut down, if VP full course, into wind enough RPM to lower temps from long low RPM taxi Could try choke just before shut down Try bringing idle way down for shut down (remember cars with carbs had anti dieseling solenoids that did nothing more than lower the idle) Goes now with saying make sure you are at idle Make sure your ignition switch is properly grounding both ignitions Try shut down on 1 mag, if same try from the other You are using proper spark plugs? Is mixture OK? Carbon in cumbustion chamber?? I would run by Lockwood, but I have had great sucess in my Volvo turbo getting carbon out by using Seafoam purchased from Autoparts store, shooting some through intake, then injecting distilled water at a fair high power setting till motor will just bout run. If it were I trying to clean out carbon from my 914, I would probably fill my water fire extinguisher with distilled water, and plumb to the cross over tube with a needle valve in line. Lead deposits will do you no good, so if you have run leaded fuel at all, running some TCP or the alternative TCP that Spruce sells before cleaning chamber may be a good idea Here is something that should not come to mind, but did, try shutting down with idle at 1800rpm, my gut is lower idle should work better, and you could get opinions from everyone in the world why it will not work, but a test will give you fact if it will not work, run by lockwood if this test will hurt anything Ron Parigoris

Subject: Rotax Experienced Mechanic in Central Texas
--> RotaxEngines-List message posted by: "dfmoeller" <dfmoeller@austin.rr.com> I recently acquired a Zenith Zodiac with a 912ULS in it. I noticed a vibration that didn't sound or feel quite right the other day and headed back to the airport. No incidents, but I would like someone to take a look at it. I'm located in Austin, Texas. Does anyone know of a mechanic with some Rotax experience nearby? Thanks, Doug Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=48102#48102
