Just coming up on 150 hours My exhaust is a bit corroded, so today I removed it for a sand blast and repaint-surprise surprise, on looking into the cylinders the engine is as clean as a whistle inside, very light coating on piston crowns and the top of combustion chamber is still shiny metal, the honing on cylinder walls is unmarked It is true that synthetics dont offer great corrosion protection but with frequent use that should not be a problem I believe that marine two-stroke oils offer the best corrosion resistance, but for wear resistance and cleanliness go synthetic On the subject of oil Injection many people have suggested I get rid and go premix! But if you don't you can be more likely to crank bearings life shortened. No on Marine oil - a big no no in rotax 582 - different operating conditions. -ie not a constant cool water supply so you need a better oil is one reason. outboard oil is mostly rated TCW 3 I use only Bombardier XPS mineral oil in 582s. Pennzoil for air cooled is just as good. Rotax reco is rating of API-TC -- NOT TCW 3 Only reason that a synthetic has use to me is you will get less deposits on your RAVE valves- if you have them , but on a 582 you don't have the exhaust valves. Synthetics - many will tel lyou all the wonderful things about them but what is wrong with good mineral oil ? I have over 300 hours in 582 in last year and no troubles with the above mineral oil. The back side of the rings tend to gum up, reducing compression and power. Even with good quality synthetics. Also if you really want to fully check the engine condition, you'll need to also check for stuck piston rings. It usually occurs on the backside of the pistion so you can see it by just looking into the exhaust port. Yes. You should get rid of anything that's not single failure tolerant. Start with the oil pump, then check out the ignition system. It's single failure tolerant so you're OK there. How about the cooling system. Oops, only one of those; and only one crank too. OK, so you'll need another engine and cooling system, or else you'll have to become a glider. Now how about those wings. Yep, you've got two so you're OK there. You've got two horizontal stabilizers, two elevators, but whoa, only one rudder and vertical stabilizer. Better add one each of those, or just get rid of them, like a B-2. Same thing for the fuselage. Got two landing gear, so you're OK there. What about your fuel system. . .
