Hugh:

Looking at Fig. 29 on page 46 of the installation manual... in the
bottom right corner just to the right of the 30A fuse the diagram says
"Batterie+..." That should be wired into the master switch (not directly
to the battery), then to the battery on the other side of the switch. 

The regulator does allow a slow drain of the battery if you wire it
exactly as Rotax describes in this installation manual. I don't remember
the exact numbers, but I do remember the headaches.
