I need to turn the shaft of a new 912 ULS engine to put some oil in the cylinders (it has been sitting in its original box for over 2-years) and can't figure out which way to turn it. Sounds like a really stupid question that could be easily answered by reading the Rotax manuals. but: The 912 Operators Manual says "Propeller shouldn't be turned reverse the normal direction of engine rotation" and goes on to say (Page 8-2) that "Direction of rotation of propeller shaft is counter-clockwise looking at p.t.o. side of engine." Sounds easy enough until you also read page 19 in the 912ULS Installation Manual, which contradicts this by saying "crank the engine by hand on attachment screws of flywheel two complete turns anticlockwise (viewed from Magneto side)." Since you can't turn the shaft both anticlockwise from the p.t.o. side while turning it counterclockwise from the mag side I don't know which way to turn the shaft. Can someone clarify this by telling me, looking from the front of the engine (from p.t.o. side toward mag side), which way the engine is supposed to turn? Thanks for the help, Les PS: I expect to begin the 912 installation in about 3-months in a Zenith CH701.

The Rotax engine has a spur reduction gear : http://contrails.free.fr/engine_rotax_reduct_en.php So whereas the props turns in one direction, the CRANKSHAFT turns the other way. At the front you turn the prop, and at the rear what you turn is the flywheel attached to the crankshaft. Do as the manuals say, and everything will be OK. Best regards, Gilles http://contrails.free.fr
