Don, just to help you to diagnose your problem. I'm flying an aircraft
with a Rotax 914. I built it took particular care designing the cooling
system.
I regularly do prolonged 60 degrees bank turns without any problem.
Sometimes do a sideslip in order to look at something below the ship. No
oil overflow problem.
> I am also gonna look closely at the cooling air outlet area. It may be that the
cowl is just not vented enough to get good airflow thru the Oil Cooler. It
is right in the middle of the front hole under the gearbox, dang near sticking
out , but maybe air is just not getting thru it., Dunno......

Hi Don
Unless you are overfilling the oil, it shouldn't come out of the overflow
pipe on the oil tank. I have about 600hrs on 912 engines in various aircraft
types and do anything but fly straight and level. I display my aircraft at
airshows which involves a lot of very steep turns and wing-overs and never
seen oil loss through the pipe. Does the oil tank have the mesh screen and
baffle plate at the base inside?
ASA have produced a good DVD called "ROTAX 912 Engine Introduction",
certainly worth a look for those new to the engines.

Roger,
Valvoline durablend is not a motorcycle oil. Just valvolines semi-syn brand of
oil. I do have a case of Kendall motorcycle oil in the garage I use in my motorcycle.
I did seriously consider just using it, and I still might. It is not synthetic.
I have read the entire section in the owners manual and the maintanince
manual on oil.
I have not used any 100LL as of yet, but likely will at some point. So far, all
93 oct Amoco.
And hey...no need to be sorry, I understand better than most how hard it is to
diagnose a proble long distance! I am very thankful for the discussion I am getting
here on this forum.
Dave,
Yes, the oil tank has the screen in it and the plate on the bottom the screen sits
on. I took all this out when I drained the tank and wiped it out. All looked
normal to me. Do you know which direction the vent hose fitting in the tank
neck points on your bird Dave? On mine, it points at 9 oclock from above, which
means in a 90deg left bank, it points straight down.
Gilles, Thx pard...good website also.

Dear Listers,
I am installing the 912ULS. In the meantime, I am reading all the info I
can in installing and maintaining the engine. Lockwood has some excellent
brochures titled Tips for the 912 series. In one of these is a chart of
recommended oils.
They point out that oil for diesel engines should NOT be used and that pure
synthetic should be avoided. Also, avoid oils that have a slippery
additive. This does not bode well for the clutch in the gear box.
The oils recommended are mostly blended and rated SG or better. They also
indicate which oils can be used for MOGAS only and which can be used for
100LL.

Just Curious,
Where did you find out that Vision was now supporting Rotax hardware.
That would be a change from my previous discussions with them at
Oshkosh. There does not seem to be anything related to Rotax on their
website.

Ken,
I think you might have misinterpreted the oil literature for the 91x
series engines.
There is nothing wrong with pure synthetic oils like Mobil One.
Mobil oil is just fine as long as you you unleaded fuel. Synthetic oils
gel and clot in the presence of lead which is bad.
If the oil tank tank on the kitfox did not have a pile of lead residue in the
bottom by the screen, it was not run using 100LL fuel.
Did anyone recently mention that the Rotax 91x engine really does not
like oil starvation? ;-) (I also recommend Dean's class at Lockwood)

Subject: | Oil Tank Overfilled |
I have just checked my oil tank level (cold engine, prior to burping the
engine, and plane level). The oil on the stick is above the full level by
about a half-inch. Dont know why! To the best of my knowledge the oil
level has not been this high in the past while checking it. Since the engine
is new and has not been run much the oil is quite clear and hard to see on
the stick, so I could have over filled it. The level of the oil appears to
be at the point where the very small hole is in the tank below the cap. No
oil is above that point.
If I have inadvertently over filled the tank by this much, what is the
consequence of running the engine? Can I safely operate the engine with this
amount of oil over-fill? If not, what is the best way to drain out some of
the excess oil with out introducing air into the system? Comments?
Suggestions?

Hi Don,
Here is a website for some good basic info on different oils. It will fill in the
gaps of why's and why nots. It will tell you what the additives are for and
who's oils seem to hold up better under certain conditions. This is only one
article and it was done for Amsoil, but shows about 20 different oils. I like
this article for learning about the basics because it is easy to understand for
most people. Look at the foaming properties and what shear additives do for
oils. After you read about shear additive you will understand why Rotax doesn't
really want a car oil unless it is all that is available.
Just read the article and make up your own mind.
http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2156.pdf
The reason for not using full synthetic with a lot of 100LL (more than 30% of the
time) is that synthetic will not suspend the lead and it will fall out of the
oil solution and collect in palces like the oil tank and different parts of
the engine. A little use of 100LL with synthetic is ok, but with a more steady
diet of 100LL you should be using semi-synthetic. Synthetic will be a better
choice than regular oil for the Rotax. I don't know enough about Kendall to comment,
but maybe this article will help you make some decisions.
You don't want an "Energy Conserving" (doesn't mean full synthetic) oil like some
car oils as someone mentioned. Motorcycle oils are not "Energy Conserving".
Bad for clutches and our gearbox, makes them slip.

Gents....I AM FIXED!
AND speaking of Lockwoods 912 schools!!!!...did you read the short article in last
Kitplanes about the author attending the school, and giving some highlites
of the advice there??.....WEll he gave me the final clue.
It was a short mention of the 2 different choices for oil return line location.
And remember me telling you guys that I took out a plug towards the rear of the
bottom of the crankcase????and a quart of oil ran out????
The author mentioned that in a pusher installation, the plug on the bottom of the
crankcase closest to the gearbox will be the lowest on climb and in any nose
up attitude, and the opposite end will be lowest on a tractor engine...and you
are to use the lowest one. WELL, that plug I took out was where the banjo bolt
return line was supposed to be installed!...mine was at the wrong end, causeing
alot of oil to just sit in the crankcase, and it was likely sucking air
every time I had the nose up...INcludeing sitting on the ramp at rest.
I changed the location...test ran it for 10 minutes...then 2 or 3 touch and goes...temps
stayed down, inlcudeing one run clear around the patch at WOT. Then
stopped...added some fuel and flew to an airpark 40 miles away and landed...grabbed
a Ice tea...and flew home. Oil temps steady at 210 all the time. WAHOOO!
I thank all who responded and helped me think this thru!
