Don:
I would first look carefully on the gearbox itself to see if you can find an
identifying number. If so, right that number down. Then get the engine S/N
off the engine and call Lockwood Aviation Tech Service (1-800-527-6829)
between 9:00 am and 10:00 am, or between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm and ask to
speak to Dean Vogel or some one else in tech service. They should be able to
help you.
Hugh

Don:
If you have a 912 UL, A, or F, the compression ratio is 9.0:1. On a 912 ULS,
or S it is 10.5:1. This is stated in the Rotax Engine Operators Manual. Call
your Rotax Dealer and give them the S/N of your engine which is located on
top of the right side of the engine (when facing the propeller), near the
magneto end to confirm it.

Hi Don,
If it's the 912uls, 100 hp then the gear box ratio is most likely 2.43:1

Don:
The G.B. ration for the 912 UL, A, and F is normally 2.27:1. However, there
is an optional ratio that can be ordered of 2.43:1.

Subject: | Re: 912 starting problems |
A friend has an Avid with the 80 hp 912 and that has suffered 4 causes and cures
for the starting troubles.
1/ one or other carbs fall off during start. Cured by attaching carbs to bracket
also replacing soft engine mounts. there are 4 SB relating to mounting the
carbs.
2/ would misfire and stop when cranking. Cured by changing ignition switches to
toggle type so that both carb float bowls could be primed by cranking engine
a few seconds before attempting to start.
3/ would fire during cranking but not pick up revs. Started and ran perfectly
when propellor removed! Preload was at lower limit. Cured by overhaul and change
of the 15 deg dog clutch with the newer 30 deg one in gearbox.
4/ would throw out starter engagement during cranking. Cured by overhaul of sprag
clutch on starter motor. there uis a SB for the 912S for this problem. We
diagnosed it on the 912UL by carrying out the tests as for the 912S, and the starter
current was 10 amps lower than that limit.
You probably dont have the first problem, but any combination of the others could
occur. total time is less than 160 hrs.
