Bill S.
The pre-loading in the gearbox is set by the use of shims under the spring washers
on the prop shaft. It requires a hydraulic press and a special tool to compress
the spring washers to remove the semi-circular retainer rings. The shims
required is a function of the space between the bottom of the retainer slot and
the top of the big gear when it is compressed at a specified force, 3600 lb,
if memory serves.
To see and understand this better, check out the photos in the Rotax 2-stroke maintenance
manual. I've not seen a photo of this procedure on the 912 gearbox,
though I watched it in Lockwood class. The force spec. may be different between
the 2-strokes and the 912 series but the method and procedure is similar.

Roger,
Your advice not to fly until he figures out the charging problem may be misleading.
For systems that require external electrical power, like radios etc. or engine
starting, this makes sense. However, as you probably know, the magnetos
in the 912 series engines, once the engine is running, are self-sustaining with
no need for external excitation. The engine will continue to run until the mags
are grounded or it runs out of fuel.

the list.
I have been going through the installation manual but as they say a picture

Roger:
Install the 22000mfd capacitor. This is to reduce the emf noise caused by
the rotating engine that is putting out electrical energy to charge the
battery. Your Comm will pick it up as rf energy.

I've a 912S on a Savannah aircraft with a Microair 760 comm. Comm works
static free 5X5 with engine not running. With engine at idle I'd rate it as
2X5 as RPM is increased so does the radio static. The radio has a
profesional made harness by a reputable shop. Looking at the electrical
diagram in the Installation manual I notice a capacitor with a value of
22000mfd 25volts can anyone tell me if that's a required component or is it
an option this part is not installed on my electrical system, Can antone
advise, thaks

RJ Roy

Hi Malcolm,
Don't fly it until you have this figured out.
You may lose an engine in flight.
It has to be your charging unit out put or the reg/rectifier. My bet it is
your reg/rectifier. They go out more often than most charging system parts.
It is easy to replace, too. First look carefully at the wires going into the
reg/rectifier and see if they look burnt or very dark in color. You can take
a volt meter and put this on the terminals to the battery and see what the
voltage to the battery is, like you said it should be about 13.8V to 14.2V
is normal. This may vary a little, but should be close.

Hi Roy,
I agree with Hugh, put the capacitor in. MY Kolb had it as do many other planes
and it should take care of the static. It will also help protect your electrical
system.

Thanks to Thilo, Hugh and Roger for their advise on the installation of
a capacitor. Do you think the (+) lead of the capacitor be installed
directly into the B+ connection of the regulator or would it be better
at another location. I am planning on a firewall install with an Adell
clamp (cushion clamp) any inputs on that?

Hi Thom,
That's true, but is it true with his 582?
I would feel better if I personally knew what the cause was so as not to damage
anything or get caught too far from home.
I'm the kind of guy who thinks that if it was working then why isn't it now and
I just have to know the reason why. Just my nature I guess.

I believe it is supposed to be installed at the +B terminal of the reg/rect.
This setup will protect your reg/rect and possibly your instruments. This does
depend on how the battery is setup with your on/off switch.
Your battery can act as a protector to the system too if it was setup that way.

Noel:
I have about 17 photographs of my engine taken at various points during the
assembly. Mounting my engine to the Allegro engine mount was very simple and
the engine fit like a glove. I'm not sure what your engine mount looks like.
I may be different than mine. Anyway, attached are a few (5) of the
pictures in .jpg format. I'll send five more in a separate email directly to
your address. Then I will send the other seven. Hopfully this will not clog
up your email. If for some reason the "List" strips the first 5 photos out,
let me know and I'll send them direct.
Do not archive.
Hugh
