Bob I have no practical experience but if the problem continues would an electric
radiator fan be suitable for grond running? should be lighter than carting
around water to spray...
Hows the 914 installation working out? appreciate your comments vs. the previous
setup

I am at the point of doing full power run-ups with my Zenith 701 with a
rotax 912 UL 80hp installed with a Skyshops firewall forward kit. When I
do a full power run up, I get a backfire after I turn the ignition key to
"off". When I taxi around keeping the engine to around 2,000 rpm, this
does not happen after shutdown, only after I do a full power run-up.
Everything else seems normal as far as I can tell, the engine starts
really well, seems to run smoothly, idles well. But after doing three
full power run ups, I have had three backfires, all after turning off the
ignition. Does anyone on the list have an idea about what might be
causing this?

Hi George,
Are you turning it off while it is at full power or are you brining it back down
and letting it idle for a moment or two? At full power that may be normal, but
not under idle.
Let it come back to idle after your run ups for 30 seconds or so before turning
of the ignition. If you turn it off at high rpms you have more fuel and a more
advanced spark than at idle.

Hi Ron,
I have run Evans in my last two 912's. It was fine until I switched it in my Flight
Design CT. It has less cowl venting than my other plane. The Evans allowed
me to see max temps. on warm days at takeoff and climb. I went back to 50/50
for some testing and it did indeed drop my CHT temps. 40F. Evans website and
one other that I know of claim drops from 30-40F.
I like Evans, but it wasn't working out very well in my CT
Bob,
Aircraft Spruce does indeed have some muffler wrap that may cut some of the heat
down. I used to use it on my helicopter.
I think better venting may help a little, but it is a ground idling issue. Maybe
you can vent the heat out the top of the cowling.
I know the water spray will work as I have seen it, but think it is more of a bandaid
and better solution would work.
As for the electric fan that may work if the fan is big enough to move enough air?
Have you tried different taxi techniques? Does this happen only in the summer months?

I had motorcycles do this when you would get them hot by asking them to
make some BTUs, then shut off. Especial in warmer temps. I even blew the
guts out of a compression gauge by taking a compression test on a very hot
motor. I believe it is glowing piece of carbon that ignites mixture.
Try letting cool a bit more before shut off. Could try idle and pull choke
for 15 seconds to richen and cool, then go to no choke to turn off.
Also I have read that ignition modules when hot, first thing that happens
is you can't turn off motor.

Hi! Ralf
Thanks for the suggestion however I don't think an electric fan (subject
to there being sufficient room) would put more air through the rad tan a
prop.
There must be an optimum setting ...it's just finding it!
The 914 installation is complicated in comparison to the Jab. But
sophistication brings fuel savings and altitude power with exceptional
torque for take off too. Very different to get used to though.

Bob,
Don't forget that any cooling difficulties will ease, if not disappear,
after 20+ hours or so of running, as the engine eases-up
