The 503 and 582 are both good engines but quite different. The 503 is
air cooled and the 582 is liquid cooled and each has its advantages
and disadvantages. They are both 2-stroke engines and are reliable if
you take very good care of them. They require more personal attention
than Lycommings and other 4-stroke engines like the Rotax 912. On the
plus side they are simpler than 4-stroke and fairly easy to do most
maintenance if you take the time to learn how to do it. I strongly
recommend attending one of the Rotax 2-stroke schools for Rotax
owners. This will give you all the info you need to fly and maintain
either the 503 or 582 with confidence.

If you move to an ELSA from a Cherokee, as I did too several years
ago, you'll also have to get used to the much lower inertia of LSAs
during landing flair. Overall, the move for me was a great improvement
in almost every respect. Much better performance in all respects
except for cruise speed and passenger carrying capacity, compared to a
      Cherokee.
