Subject: | What Are You Thankful For...? |
Dear Listers,
Here in the United States, Thursday is our National day of Thanksgiving. Many
of us will be traveling to be with our families and friends to share in generous
feasts of plenty and giving thanks for many blessings that have been bestowed
upon us.
Many Listers have expressed over the last couple of weeks how thankful they are
for the Email Lists and Forums here on the Matronics servers and for all of the
assistance and comradery they have experienced being a part of the Lists.
One of my favorite kind of comments is when write to me and says something like,
"Its the first thing I do in the morning while I'm having my morning coffee!".
That's a wonderful tribute to the purpose and function of these Lists. Its
always great to hear I'm not the only one that jumps out of bed each morning
to check my List email!!
Won't you take a minute today and show your appreciation for these Lists and for
their continued operation and upgrade?

Bob,
Below is the quote I copied from Dean Vogel's response to you, which
you posted.

This statement clearly implies that until the oil temperature reaches
120F you can't be sure the engine is running filtered oil. At least
that is what it says to me. It may not be what Dean meant but it is
what he said and the implied meaning is not correct. When I first read
that statement I could not believe he meant it but after reading the
question immediately following the statement then I had no choice but
to believe he meant what the statement implied.
Again, I'm not saying Dean is intentionally mis-leading anyone in this
regard. I'm saying he is talking about something he doesn't fully
understand and perhaps mis-understood what he was told by someone
else. I'm not defending automotive filters and have no intention of
switching to automotive filters on our 912. I'm arguing only against
propagating mis-information about the relationship of 120F oil and the
oil filter bypass opening.

Hi Noel,
With your car do you use a block heater?
I know the people who live in the extreme cold climates down to 0F or lower have
different issues. Preheating an engine with a blanket style heater or any method
to keep the engine warmer on very cold days would certainly help. In my post
I tried to qualify the temp range from 20F-100F. This I would think is the
more normal day to day operation around the US during the year. Extremes during
some debates should be considered, but realize they are out of the average
day to day operating parameters and special consideration or a new debate on the
extreme should be talked about. People in the extremes should take special
precautions when operating their Rotax or any engine.

I changed the subject line.
Here in Buffalo, NY we are now in the 20s(F) at night and will probably see zero
F by early January. We installed a Reiff pre-heating system on our 912UL two
years ago. It works wonders. It has two elements. One element is a fairly low
wattage (50-75 watts or so) and is bonded to the bottom of the crankcase and
runs continuously while plugged in. The other is a higher wattage but is thermostatically
controlled and mounted on the oil tank. It cycles off when the oil
tank temperature reaches 150F.
Even in the coldest temperatures here in February, the case temperature never drops
below about 65F, usually around 70F. Upon starting, the CHT and Oil Temperatures
read around 70F immediately and the warm up period (to 120F oil temp)
is dramatically shortened.

north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

When I lived in Labrador a block heater was almost mandatory. I say almost
because I knew one guy who refused to use one... He drove a company car for
Scully Mines.
Now I live on the island portion of the province and though we do have some
cold weather (maybe 10 -15 days a year with bitter cold weather) I find it
hardly worth the bother of plugging in. Usually I start the car, a Subaru
Imprezza, and let it warm up for a minute or so before putting it in gear.
Then for the first five minutes, until the engine has warmed enough to put
the temp gauge into the green, I won't allow the engine to turn more than
2000rpm. My personal rule of thumb is to never draw power from a cold
engine.
