The 310 looks a little small if you really need to fly the plane on battery
power. I use the PC-680 with my 914 and it gives me good starting even in
really cold weather. I also like the extra power if I need to keep the fuel
pumps running should the electrical take a hike.

Bob,
This 7 Ah battery physically resembles to the Hawker SBS 8 model.
300+ MCRs have been flying for years with an SBS 8. We are presently
flying and starting with an SBS 8 in our Rotax 914 MCR four seater. The
battery was bought in 2003...

You're right about the need to fly on battery power.
What I did not mention is that I installed a second SBS-8 dedicated to
powering the aux pump.
This way I have really duplicated power supply to the pumps, and can
keep the engine running should the main circuit (regulator, alternator,
main battery) fail.

The Hawker SBS-8 and the PC310 are made by the same company I believe. The SBS-8
is a little hard to come by and both batteries cost about $140. Be careful when
talking about the 914 and the 912 as they do have some different requirements
and needs. I am not sure if the battery is one of those items. You would need
to consult the Rotax manual. That can be done online if you don't have one.

Hi Guys,
I am now a Rotax Repair Center. (certified for service and heavy maint.)from the
gearbox recall let me know. You can fly in one day and fly out the next or if
you get there early enough you can leave the same day. You can send me your
gearbox, also. Let me know so I can make sure I have enough gear boxes on hand.

Interesting data about those two batteries.

The alternator and charging system are the same in the 912 and the 914.

The 914 needs dual power sources in order to achieve redundancy, as
both pumps are electrical, making the engine "electrically dependent".

Better yet, the proposed architectures on http://www.aerolectric.com.
The diagram shown on the Rotax 914 manual do not provide real electrical
redundancy, considering the regulator poor service life record.
