I have some questions for Rotax users of 503, and 582 (583?) engines
who do their own maintenance.
1) How many special tools do you need to tear down these engines?
2) What are common problems encountered with the 2 stroke series?
3) Do they require consistent tinkering or are they pretty much good
for the duration of the 300 hour TBO?

I haven't ever used any 'special' rotax tools. You'll need metric sockets &
wrenches. Standard gear pullers can be used with a little common sense...
and maybe a touch of heat.
Ring sticking from carbon buildup is the most common problem, causing
cylinder wall scuffing and possible in flight seizure. Regular checking
through the exhaust port at regular intervals (40-60 hrs) will let you know
when or if to decarbon (remove heads & cylinder walls & clean pistons &
rings) the engine.
I would say just about all of the 503's out there have way more than 300hrs
without a crank change and the most of the 582's. Once again, a little
common sense, attention to detail, & regular maintenance will keep these
baby's ticking for a long, long time. These were originally snowmobile
engines adapted to ultralights. Many of those have over 2 thousand hours on
them.

BUT, unless you have the ability, desire, & confidence to work on them
yourself OR you have lots of money and live close to a Rotax Repair Center
you might want to consider other alternatives, if you want to spend much
time in the air.

I have that DVD, not really dissapointed with it, but don't expect it to
help you rebuild. I think the one from CPS is supposed to be better.
