Thanks Buffalo Thomas,
I Can't imagine the temperature problems you deal with over winter!
I do know which prop is out, but may get a chance to swap props this weekend.
Is it feasable to get one blade, or are all three nessessary for a match.
Also doing another mechanical and pneumatic carb balance. Suddenly running very
roughly at about 2500, however got too dark to follow that up.
regards
Gtblu

Gtblu,
The winters here are not so cold as in Minnesota or northern Maine due to our proximity
to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, but they are long and perpetually overcast
with lots of snow. We still have about 8-10" of the white stuff on the ground
now.
Woodcomp has a precise weight record of each blade they sell by serial number so
if we bang up a blade they can replace it with one of the identical weight.
Whether or not the center of mass is in the identical location is another matter,
which can affect dynamic balance, but so can other factors as Roger has stated.
I don't know if the other prop manufacturers do this or not. I broke both
blades on the PowerFin on my Kolb so will be replacing them with a matched pair
reusing the hub.

Subject: | Re: 912 oil filters |
After reading all the good stuff about oil filters, I ordered 6 PL10241 from Amazon
at 2 for $11.50 or so. Found they do not fit on a Kitfox S-7. The Exhaust
Manifold is too close for the 3.3" height. About 3.1" height would be ok.
I don't want to loosen the manifold each time I change the oil so I am looking
again. I am currently using the Challenger cp9124 and managed to sell the PL's
to a friend with a 914uls.

Subject: | Rotax 912S Dead or not ? .... |
I like to know If I have damaged my Rotax 912S.
My A&P changed oil hoses one going from oil tank to oil thermostat the second hose
going from oil tank to the oil pump.
While in the process oil spilled out and I am assuming any oil in the engine was
completely drained out.
The only oil remaining was the one in the oil cooler. The oil filter was replaced
and the magnetic oil plug was removed for revision.
I believe after this procedure as per Rotax instructions he should have purged
the engine with new oil.
He did not purge the engine as he claims he wasnt aware of this procedure.
He applied Fresh oil ran the engine for approximately 10- 15 minutes.
I asked if he checked the oil pressure gage and he did not check. I have an electronic
Information system and he did not know hot work it and look for oil pressure.
My question is it possible the engine has suffered internal damage do to not purging
after it was drained?
I s there a possibility engine may have pulled new oil since oil cooler was not
drained?
What should be my next step ?
thanks in advance for any help you may offer..

Get hold of SI-912-018 from www.rotax-aircraft-engines.com and follow
the procedure.
If, as you say, it has been run, I would start by checking the valve
clearances as mentioned in paragraph 3.1.3
cheers

1. Check the EIS yourself for oil pressure with the engine
running
Clarify your facts
"My A&P changed oil hoses one going from oil tank to oil
thermostat the second hose going from oil tank to the oil
pump"
oil thermostats have 4 connections, were the other three
hoses left in place ?
if there is an oil cooler there would be another two
connections - same question.
The Rotax procedure is to remove the plugs (or one from
each cylinder) and all the plug leads. Remove the "from
the oil tank" hose and fill it with oil, put it back on
the oil tank, and then turn over the engine on the
starter, for a max of 10 seconds at a time until the oil
pressure shows on the guage. Once there is oil at these
lowish pumping speeds, replace the plus and the leads,
check the oil level and then start the engine again.
If te engine is a 912S (certified) you needed a Rotax
certified A&P I would have thought (or at least one who
knew about the Rotax procedures). If it is a 912ULS
(uncertified) then the Rotax procedure is rather more
voluntary.
However the real check is whether you now have oil pressure.
You do not have to drain the oil cooler, it is recognised
that there will be a little old oil being mixed with the
new. Draining the oil cooler would make the "purging" more
important !
2. Get a new A&P
3. Learn how to do it yourself, at least to give guidance
to anyone else you let touch your plane !

Hello Simon and RFWH
1. Yes the other 3 hoses where left in place and oil cooler was never drained.
2. I will check the valve
clearances and oil pressure as soon as I am able to get back to the hangar.
3. Should I check for oil pressure by hand propping with plugs removed or should
I start engine for 5 to 10 seconds?
4. I plan to check the oil magnetic plug and cut oil filter open to see if there
is any evidence of grinding metal residue. What do you think about this idea?
5. Really my main concern is that I am not certain if there was a possibility that
engine ran dry of oil for 10-15 minutes.
Thanks for the support.

You may want to do a differential pressure test too. Just to be sure there
has been no cylinder scoring.
