The vibration problem was not due to prop balance. It was a combination of
slightly loose bolts that mount the 912 engine and a slightly off carb sync.
The mechanic told me that the bottom-only mounts will loosen up because the
engine isn't support right. Unless you add mounts on top of the engine these
bolts need serious attention. He suggested changing the four 10mm bolts to
studs and using lock washers, which he said won't loosen.

Jack,
The plane is a Zenith CH701 STOL/bush plane with 20 hours on it. I have
attached a picture but don't know if Matronics will post it. Zenith came out
with a better 912 mounting arrangement this year, but I don't want to spend
the bucks and time it would take to install it.

How can I find out if my 912ULS includes a clutch? I understand that Rotax
started including them with all 912s about the time my engine was purchased,
about 4-years ago. Since I purchased it, unused, with my Zenith kit (it now
has about 25 hours on it) I never got any documentation about this. I have
been told that, with a clutch, the engine would do a lot better in a prop
strike.
The engine's SR is 5643233.
Thanks,
Les

Les You can tell by the part# of the gearbox, the # will be stamped on
the top of the gearbox. 888-560 = no clutch 887-712 = with clutch.
If your # is other, I can probably cross check. Doc

Congratulations Les,
I know that chasing a ghost can be very frustrating to say the least.
Your problem solving will help us all identify issues and where to look when the
answer is not obvious.
