Subject: | Hobbs power source |
I bought an item from Spruce called a PowerGenie. It is an electrical device
that fits between the regulator and the positive post of the battery and a
third wire going to the hobbs as power. I guess it senses when the engine is
charging the battery and opens up power to the Hobbs thus negating the use of an
oil pressure switch which I removed from my engine. Has anyone used one of
these? Which wire would it connect to on the rectifier as the directions only
specify connecting to the plus wire coming from a regulator? I sure don't want
to
mess up my electric's as it is pretty much "magic" to me.
For a little background, I went to Lockwoods Rotax school and their display
engine, which we tore apart, was obtained from an owner who had the Hobbs
sender and oil pressure sender on a brass adapter going into the oil pressure
sensing hole. The Hobbs should have been plugged into the oil hole supplying oil
to the propeller (constant speed) if it was not needed. Anyway this two into
one brass fitting did not hold, broke off, drained all the oil in the engine.
Rotax engines do not like having no oil!
When I got back home, I checked my engine and walaa I had the same setup
(my Kitfox was a recent purchase) I got rid of the brass adapter, Hobbs oil
pressure sender and connected the Hobbs to the master switch. This PowerGenie
device is an attempt to have the meter running only when the engine is. It's a
nice idea if it works as I have left my master on for a short time from time to
time and I don't want to add engine time when it is not running. Any feedback
would be greatly appreciated !

Dick,
I installed one of these on my Zenith CH-701 with a Rotax 912UL. As long as the
engine is charging
your hobbs meter will run. I found a problem with the installation with the capacitor
used on
the rotax installation(my installation). When the engine is shut down and every
thing turned off
the charge in the capacitor keeps the hobbs running for a period of?time.?I haven't
thought of a
way to fix this yet, or have even tried. When I get home I will look at my?wiring
diagrams and
let you know how mine is installed, just can't remember offhand.
Take a look at my website at:
http://www.701builder.com and you might see?a pic of installation under electrical or?instrument panel.
???????????????????????????????????????? Don't forget to sign the guestbook.

http://www.701builder.com/electrical04.htm
Scroll down to the 13th pic, its the thing with the red, yellow, blue wires comming
out of it.
I installed it right behind the hobbs. You really cannot see how its wired here.
I'll look the
diagrams tonight.
