At the moment Rotax support the use of E5 blends (5% ethanol), but in
Thailand where I live it is becoming harder to find other than E10 (10%
ethanol, blended to 95RON).
Bing have a carburetor float and bowl kit to resist ethanol and other
additives, but from what I can determine, use of E10 without modifications
is not uncommon and seems to work OK.
Does anyone have some hands on experience with this ?

We did not use elbows of any kind. Instead we carefully routed the
hoses to avoid any tight bends or kinks. It has been in service this
way for over two years now with no problems. Each engine installation
presents different geometric routing problems so this may not work on
yours.

Subject: | Questions on old 912 |
I'm looking at a project that includes an old 912. Supposedly this is a 100
hp model (ULS?) made in 1998. The serial number is 4.425.588. The gear box
part number is 888-560 with a s/n of 16535. The engine is said to have only
6 hours on it. It includes a Woodcomp 3 bladed, ground adjustable prop.
The big question is it a reasonable used engine? Based on the s/n I don't
see any significant service bulletins. Other questions:
- The gear box p/n indicate that the engine does not have the slipper
clutch. I believe I can retrofit the clutch with Rotax p/n 996-889
(approximate cost $1000). Does it make sense to add the clutch?
- can I add the clutch or does it have to be done by an authorized Rotax
shop?
- how can I confirm that the s/n is for a 100 hp engine?
- any issues with the engine being stored that long?
- any other questions I should ask the seller?

It is a 100 hp engine - I found that 912ULS engine numbers
start at 4425-001 so yours is a very early one ! See
SB--912-042UL R1.
There are lots of SB, SL and SI associated with the
engine. Look them up on the Rotax site.
"Based on the s/n I don't see any significant service
bulletins." is flippant and incorrect.
6 hours isn't many. Ask the seller - why did he stop using
it ? Did he write off the aircraft ? If so was the engine
shock loaded (a problem if it has no slipper clutch). 6
hours is hardly enough time to prove the airworthiness of
the aircraft it was attached to !
If it has been used and recorded correctly there should be
an engine log-book associated with the engine. That should
show whether any SB have been applied.
If the engine was just stopped one day and has been left
for 5 or 6 years then there is an issue especially if it
was outside or had any open orifices. There will be
lots of rust ! If it was "put into storage" with oil in
the cylinders and various other precautions then it might
be OK. Not sure I would want to use the engine without a
full strip down, or a full inspection with a camera snake !

"Significant" as in "there is no fix" or "it will cost a lot of money and
time to correct". Of the 27 SB's pulled-up by the Rotax owner site for this
s/n I see a lot of "inspect" and "check". These look like the biggest
issues:
SB-912-022UL - Replacement of Valve Spring Retainer on Single Valve Spring
Conf. 912 & 914
SB-912-040UL - Introduction Of A New Oil Dipstick For Rotax Engine Type 912
& 914 (Series)
SB-912-037 - Installation Of Electric Starter With Enhanced Power For 912
& 914 Engines - R1.
Supposedly the engine was fitted to a light aircraft and was "too much for
the plane" and was removed. I'll be looking for more documentation of its
history when I inspect the engine.
Thanks, Craig

Peter--
We have the same problem . Only 10% is available. I've been flying with f
or the past 150 hours with no problems.

Your Rotax will run just fine on 10% ethanol. I know Rotax says 5% in writing,
but many parts of the world that is not possible and they run up to 17% with out
any issues. Your Rotax 912ULS should not have any issues if you can not find
ethanol free fuel. Ethanol free fuel would be the better choice of the two,
but sometimes that is not possible. People have been running ethanol in their
Rotax 912 uls engines for years. Some people are a little more conservative than
others.

Working is different that remaining to be covered by the valued Rotax
factory warrantee. Oregonians are going to learn the hard way this
summer as our fuel is no longer compliant and is going the way of
politically correct - E10 to support U.S. Corn squeezing.
Good luck with continued safe operation.
