Les, I believe we were refering to always turning the prop thru by hand in order to check the oil quantity and to get the oil out of the case and into the oil tank prior to engine start. You could readily tell if you had normal compression or a hydraulic lock. As you say ,you should NEVER hand prop the engine to start it.Although in my Rotax engine class the instructor Dean mentioned that he knew of two cases where it was done and it was successful. Both guys that did it said they would NEVER do it again! (a good way to loose life or limb) Dick Maddux Kitfox 4-1200 912UL Pensacola,Fl **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Dale, A couple users on the Wings Forum have had this (no compression) problem. See http://www.wingsforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=14826 as a start, then search on 'compression'. Seems to be related to sticking valves/contaminated fuel/oil. Wes Whitley 912ULS/ Just Highlander #095

Hello, I recently purchased an Interplane Skyboy with a 912ULS. The engine often, not always, exhibits an extreme high frequency vibration on start-up. I cannot get the revs up much above 2000 during one of these attacks, and the best technique I have discovered to smooth out the engine is to get the revs up as high as possible (again, about 2000), and then chop the throttle, and quickly open just a crack. If the engine catches, it is smooth as glass. If not, I repeat until it does smooth out. I have had my mechanic do the pneumatic carb sync, and generally go through the motor. All cylinders are 78 pounds, plugs look good, etc. It feels almost like a 2-stroke engine that is '4-stroking'. All four cylinders seem to be firing during one of these episodes, as all the exhaust pipes are hot. I have had this happen on a dead cold start, and a restart after only sitting for 10 minutes. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance, Rick Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=210571#210571

My 912 does the same thing but I smooth it out with choke. About a minute it will hold an idle. Hi! Rick It sounds to me to be the slipper clutch that needs adjustment. Unless you can say you don't have one I'd have a check done on it! Sounds balmy but I believe it is quite likely> Regards Bob Harrison G-PTAG Rotax 914. -----Original Message----- From: owner-rotaxengines-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rotaxengines-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of rickwehrmann Sent: 27 October 2008 19:55 Subject: RotaxEngines-List: Rough starting 912uls <rick.wehrmann@autopkg.com> Hello, I recently purchased an Interplane Skyboy with a 912ULS. Hi everybody, I have a hard time believing, that you can start a 912 by end - you will need at least 300 RPM for the ignition to fire the plugs - that's a bit too much for hand propping.
