Perhaps I didn't explain the issue correctly; I'm not talking about
temperature or moisture having an effect on the paper fuel filters. I would like
to
know if anyone has had an issue with Ethanol enhanced fuel causing the paper
filters to become partially or totally clogged.

Silvano,
Reason I asked is that I run a 912UL and other than lubricating the throttle
and choke shafts and cleaning out the float chambers I've needed to do
nothing else. Engine runs smooth and sweet from idle to full power.
IMOO, when running well, leave "well" alone.

A few years back at a Rotax seminar conducted by Phil Lockwood we were told
never to use a paper filter. The reason was that if you have bad fuel, the
paper filter will clog up and stop the fuel flow completely whereas the
screen filter will still let enough through to keep your engine running. You
can buy these filters at Napa part # 740-1155. They are clear and have one
screen in them.

Subject: | Using a key Ignition switch with a Rotax 912 |
Current and voltage will peak at full power and full rpm... I only turn off
my ignition when the engine is idling and both voltage and current are at a
minimum. If you install separate mag switches and use them to shut down
then there will never be any voltage or current pass through your switch.

Hugh,
I wired my aircraft according to Robert Nuckolls Aeroelectric company's
Rotax 912/914 wiring diagram Z16, except I used an ignition key. I know
that the staring current never goes through the keyed switch. My concern is
the current going through when the ignition is shorted out to turn the
engine off.
Craig Payne answered the question better by telling me how much current and
voltage goes through the mag shut off (250V & .5A "minimum"). But I think I
need to know the maximum rather than minimum amount. and then call the
keyed/switch manufacturer to see what he says.

Les: I don't know how you have wired your 912, but I can tell you that I use
a regular keyed ignition switch to start my 912. The switch has three
positions, On, Start, Off, and Acc. It is an ordinary ignition switch. The
full starting current does not go through the switch. The starting position
on the switch pulls in the starter relay coil which connects the + 12V side
of the battery to the starter itself.

I know it is not the best idea to use an off the shelf inexpensive duel
ignition switch with a key because of the possibility of the switch failing.
However, given the ease of use and (limited) security feature, I chose to
use such a switch.
Now I am being told that it is a particularly bad idea to use this type of
ignition switch on a Rotax 912 engine because a lot more current passes
through the switch with a Rotax 912 than with a Continental or Lycoming. I
was also told that this current far exceeds the current that these switches
were designed for.
Does anyone know if this information is true? I don't want to have to lie
upside down under may panel for a few hours pulling out the darn switch if
this is just an old wife's tale.

Silvano,
You should order a Bing Carburettors Aircraft Tuning and Parts Manual
from BING
at 800-309-2464 and do the rebuild yourself. The task is not daunting
and akin to changing
out a tire. I'd not hire a mechanic to do such a routine task. The
manual is all you need
unless you've never held a screwdriver before.

I concur.
I also have heard Phil and Dean say to stay away from paper element
filters. This was based on field experience with failures.
Switch to plastic mesh filters.
Consider it an AD.

I doubt the paper filters will have any issues with paper filters except if
you are premixing your fuel and you have a phase separation at which time
the engine will stop filter or not! With oil in the gas when a phase
separation occurs it forms a heavy mass of off white to tan coloured sludge
which I doubt you could pass through a fine screen let alone a paper filter.
Water will pass through paper filters no problem... At least it does on cars
and trucks not to mention my coffee maker. Water has a very hard time
passing through felt or chamois while gas passes right through it... Use a
good felt cloth or Chamois to filter all your fuel. BTW it is suggested to
pre-wet a chamois with gasoline before using it to filter water out of the
gas.

Hi Silvano,
"other than lubricating the throttle and choke shafts"
Does Rotax or Bing recommend lubricating the throttle and choke shafts of
Bing type 64 carbs?
What lubricant do you use?
Thx.

Engine oil. I've had "Bing" carbs ever since my Triumph TR3. No big deal.
