Subject: | Jim's engine failure |
Regarding Jim F's recent post to the rotax list, I had a similar incident
with my 912UL. The last time I flew I had a normal run up, took off and
after I got airborne the engine ran rough and would only produce 5000 rpm
at full throttle. I just barely made it around the pattern and landed. I
took the engine out of the airplane and took it to the Rotax dealer. So
far they have put it on the test stand and of course it ran perfectly for
15 minutes at 5400 rpm. He was going to do a leak down test and other
diagnostics and I have not yet heard the outcome of those tests.
On thing that was interesting though is the rotax mechanic said that the
ACS ignition switch can do wacky things given the pulses of electricity
that go through the switch. He suggested putting separate properly rated
mag switches in the panel and using the ACS ignition switch just for
starting. I had never heard of this but I will be putting in the mag
switches regardless of what the outcome of the engine diagnostics are.
Jim do you have an ACS ignition switch by any chance?

Had it happen once to me... has never happened again (200 hours now). I
was actually taxing out to take off. Mine was in Florida, early AM, high
humidity. Probably carb ice.

Blaming the ACS switch sounds like voodoo thinking.
Switches conduct or not, sometimes intermittently, but not every other
pulse!
