I guess I now need to decide if I should replace the sender with the old VDO style
or try and find a gage that matches my others.

Hi Mike,
Be careful of the desire to have style replace safety.
The old VDO sender was a dog which is why it was switched, big
mass on a moment arm, none too accurate either.
