I just saw a similar problem in a 912 powered Alegro. The charging system seemed to have problems keeping the voltage up at anything less than cruise power. Finally the charging system quit working. After the regulator was replaced all was much better, even the low voltage at low rpm issue. I wouldn't be surprised if your low voltage problems went away as well. The Alegro has 2 glass panels, electric fuel pump, landing lights, strobes, transponder, gps, etc, etc, etc. and can maintain reasonable voltage levels... now. -------- Scott www.ill-EagleAviation.com do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=242481#242481

In my case, it appeared some solder had dribbled into the spade connector on one of the battery leads (the one going to B+ on the R/R) so it never correctly connected to the R/R. I figure it finally just came off inside the connector creating an open circuit and blowing the regulator. BTW, is there a better quality R/R we can use instead of the Ducati one? For 170 bucks a pop, they shouldn't blow so easily and often..... LS -------- LS Titan II SS Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=242490#242490

Does anyone have first hand experiance using a soft start module on a 914? (912 or 92S?) Which ignition did you install it on? Do you notice any difficulties? Actual benefits? Thx. Ron Parigoris

I couldn't find any source for it here. Looks like a nice regulator tho... LS -------- LS Titan II SS Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=242524#242524

No experience with it but we did discuss the Soft Start module at the Rotax course I just attended at Rotech in Vernon BC. They said it is not needed on the 914 compared to the 912S due to the lower compression ratio. Hi Ron, I have to own up to having a commercial interest in the SSM (I manufacture them for ConAir). As I already have more than enough work in the pipeline I wont try to convince you to buy one, but... My old 912 (not an S) over the years has occasionally kicked back but with the SSM fitted it now starts with much less fuss (and doesn't kick back). With the SSM it kinda lumbers into life in a lazy fashion and then as the SSM becomes inactive it perks up (I normally wait till the ignition has advanced before switching the second ignition on). As for issues, you have to ensure that everything is right (battery state, ignition gap, carb balance, etc.) otherwise you're wasting your money fitting a SSM. I don't know why but some engines just don't seem to need the SSM while others do. If you haven't experienced any problems yet I would wait and see. If you get kickbacks and everything else is looking right, perhaps you should fit one. Cheers, Mark Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=242553#242553

Lucien: My only comment about this is you can place in the Rotax circuitry a small red light (mounted on the panel) that will alert you if the regulator is not charging the battery (i.e. bad regulator). In fact, this light is shown on the simplified wiring diagram in the Rotax 912 Installation Manual on page 46 of 66. If that red light comes on you are operating off of the remaining charge in the battery, and not charging it. Guys, if I am incorrect in my understanding of this please let me know. In other words if you are flying along and this light comes on, the battery is not being charged by the engine and you should land. Hugh -----Original Message----- From: owner-rotaxengines-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rotaxengines-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of lucien Sent: Saturday, May 02, 2009 7:53 PM Subject: RotaxEngines-List: 912ULS integrated alternator question Hi all, Posted this question also over on the Kolb list but thought I'd ask here as well since this is the Rotax list. I'm curious for the 912 gurus, is it ok for the integrated alternater on the 912 series to have no load on it? I just discovered last night that my reg/rect is long since burnt out. At least for the last 3 or 4 operating hours anyway. finally smelled a rat after yesterday's flight that the battery took a bunch of charge where some several flights before it was still most of the way charged after the same electrics were used. My voltage would always run low when I had the electrics on so didn't notice it on the voltmeter either. I checked the stator resistance with my ohmmeter according to the heavy maint. manual and that looks correct. Also ran er up with the meter hooked to the two generator leads and got a good 15 volts AC at high idle, on up to 25 and more as I revved it up. So the stator appears to be undamaged. Can't find anything in the manuals about any adverse affects of operating the alternator with no load, which is what the case has been for a bit now. Anyone know? I assume it's ok since it's just a coil of wire with no current flow due to the open circuit. Ordering new R/R on Monday... I have talked to some who have used them. They seem to like the way it starts. I also talked to Phil Lockwood at Sun and Fun and of course he recommended it. Even if you do not have the kick back problem, it should help on the wear and tear of your engine, sprag clutch and gear box. I use an Odyssey 925 battery and with the high torque starter, the cranking amps just really spin the 912s. So it kind of plows through the rough start up that some engines have and that mine used to have. I have an Aventura II and the battery is in the nose, far from then engine which is mounted as a pusher on top of the plane. I use #4 gauge starter cable because of the distance. This is also important. _____ From: owner-rotaxengines-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rotaxengines-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of rparigor@suffolk.lib.ny.us Sent: Sunday, May 03, 2009 2:52 PM Subject: RotaxEngines-List: Soft start Does anyone have first hand experiance using a soft start module on a 914?
