don't electrolytics degrade if not used for a long time?

Subject: | Wiring connector |
Rotaxers,
I am installing a Rotax Ring Mount on a 912 rotax engine. I am at the point where
I have to disconnect the electrical connectors to slip the ring mount on.
My problem: I have a two mag kill switch wires already installed in the connector.
These wires are preventing me from separating the two connectors. Is there
a tool or shortcut way to remove the wire from the connector?
I hope I'm making myself clear.
Thanks,
Tommy Walker in Alabama

For what it's worth, since I started this thread ;) :
- got new R/R in from lockwood yesterday, everything charges fine now with no problems.
- I'm also a ham
- I lived in Austin TX for 20 years too.
Thanks for all the help folks,

Graham,
If it lost 1/2 of it's capacitance it would still have plenty. 57,000 mF

Pete
do they ever go open circuit or even short circuit? I'm not an expert in
these things, just try and remember

Graham,
An old electrolytic can be refreshed by slowly applying voltage and current
over time. Start with a variable dc power supply at a couple volts. Watch
the amps and work up to full voltage rating. As I recall it takes 5 minutes
plus 1 minute for every month the cap has set. My Kitfox III did not have a
capacitor on it and the rectifier regulator lasted 400+ hours. I have not
actually fired up the new cap but will do the refresh before I do.
