Has anyone on this list every tried adapting a different carburetor (single) to
the Rotax 912 series engine? If so, I'd like to hear anything/everything you've
learned in the process?

There was a guy, who is form California, who sells a fuel injection bolt on
for the 912 and 914 but it cost about $8,000. I was talking to him at Sun
and Fun. He uses some of the military stuff that comes off of the predator
drones.
He says his 914 puts out 150hp.
Cool idea but if you bolt one of these things on you engine, forget about
any support from Rotax.

I am a sport pilot and don't fly at night, but went up in my experimental
Zenith Rotax 912 powered ship last evening. With all the extra night time
stuff on (strobe, landing light (55watt), & cabin lights) the voltage went
down to 11.9 at 3500-rpm and 12.3V at my 4900-rpm cruse. Is this normal or
do I have voltage regulation issues? Without the extra load my voltage runs
about 12.9-13.0 V and my battery is holding 12.8V when I fly during the day.
I don't have an alternator and just use the Rotax coils for power.
Thanks for your advice.

Subject: | Rotax 912 - interesting observation |
Hi folks,
went to the airfield today for a short flight with my Zodiac CH 601 HDS with
Rotax 912 UL. During the pre-flight two of my flying buddies came up. One of
them started to turn the prop for the oil check. He remarked how 'easy' it
was to turn the prop. His plane is also equipped with a 912 UL, but the
compression stroke is much, much more pronounced on his airplane. We
actually did a side-by side comparison.
My engine (120 hours) has been like this since new. It runs fine; the Zodiac
is one of the faster ones in this class. I haven't checked the compression
yet, but oil consumption is very low (no need to re-fill between annuals).
Fuel consumption is also in the normal range. I believe the engine is just
fine. However, does anybody have an explanation for that?
Thanks
Thilo

Yep, sounds normal to me. The 912 alternator is capable of only about 250W output
and probably does less than that on a continuous basis. I get about the same
readings when I have my whelen strobes and landing light going. The lighting
coil alternator is only able to keep up with my panel/radio and my strobes and
that's about it. Once I turn on more stuff it falls behind and starts getting
into the battery (i.e. drops below 12V and into the 11's).
Keep in mind also that the stock Ducati voltage regulator that comes with the 912
is a piece of junk, it can't take continuous high duty-cycle operation for
long periods of time - at continuous loads like that it'll eventually literally
burn out. I.e. put your hand on it after a flight with all your electrics on
it and it'll be smoking hot.
I'm working on a computer fan installation to put over mine, supposedly extra cooling
will help keep it from smoking it's little garbagy, 170 buck self to death....

Does your friend have the 100 horse version? I.e. the 912ULS? That motor has a
bigger bore and higher compression so it should be stiffer than the 912UL by a
fair bit.
Even so, on my 912ULS, one cylinder always feels really soft when cranking it over,
but the compressions have always measured perfect and the motor runs fine.
I'd do a leak down on it if you're concerned about it just to make sure everything's
ok....

Subject: | Re: 447 mid-range rough running |
Folks,
Thanks lots for the info about the mid-range roughness. I now have some
experience to go on whereas before I had about zero. Next week I'll go
over it with the recs I've gotten from you and if it still doesn't run
well the carb comes off for overhaul.
Also, the method of installing the spring is great. That's one of those
"why didn't I think of that" deals. Thanks so much!
Best,
Dave Kulp
