Can I inspect/change the front crank seal on my 582 with B gearbox while on the
aircraft (kitfox)?

Well. It will be pretty difficult to unbolt the gearbox while sitting
on the aircraft, but I suppose it can be done. ;-)
Sorry. Couldn't help it. I know you can inspect the seal by just
pulling the gearbox off, a very simple procedure. However I don't
know whether you can change it.

well since noone's answering... You have to split the crankcase to get the crank
seals in and out. They have teats on them that rides in grooves in the crankcase
halves so (thankfully) there's no way they can be removed or installed without
splitting the halves.
When you do install the new ones, be sure the little teats don't cover up the flow
holes in the halves. i.e. orient the seals and them mark where they are with
a marker. Then check the alignment of the marks once you close the crankcase.

Thanks. I didn't think I'd get away that easily.

If the crank seals are leaking, i.e. the runny fluid is coming out pretty steadily,
you're better off doing a full teardown/cleanup/reseal. By the time you get
the crankcase apart, the whole engine is generally apart anyway......
Might as well do a full service at the time....

It's not that. I just have a little bit leaner mixture on the front cylinder and
wonder if it might be sucking a little extra air. The crankcase itself appears
absolutely water tight and there are no visible leaks whatsoever.
