Generally, oil analyses are done at every (or every other) oil change. Assuming your engine is currently in excellent shape and there is no reason to doubt that with the care you are giving it, once you have a baseline analysis, comparison with subsequent analyses by the same lab preferably will enable you to see if a particular metal content is getting much greater. With this information and knowing what various parts of the engine are made of, will help you anticipate potential problems and identify their source before they become a flight risk. So for your first analysis, the absolute values are not particularly informative unless you know the "normal range" of similar engines. This is the value of having it done by a lab that knows Rotax engines and can give you the normal ranges for your engine type. -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY http://riddletr.googlepages.com/sportpilot-cfi http://riddletr.googlepages.com/a%26pmechanix A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that works. - John Gaule Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=254069#254069 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 09:07:18 AM PST US Subject: RotaxEngines-List: Re: Rotax 912 UL Oil Analysis From: "rampil" Hugh, Can you tell us what lab you sent your oil sample to, so that we may avoid that one. They did not happen to tell you that they knew what to do about Rotax four strokes did they? Different labs usually draw up their own calibrations and normal range curves, but perhaps Kev might have insight on what the factory considers OK? Lockwood uses them. You will always have some findings in any oil sample from any engine. If you get one back for a Rotax that says within "normal limits" then there really isn't anything to report. They will also want to compare at least two samples for your specific engine so you need to send another one at the 50 hr. oil change. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az.
