If this gets to this temp then you probably have bigger problems to worry about. If you worry about Evans igniting then what are you going to do about your fuel and oil burning issue. Those are far worse. Even 50/50 will burn. You can and should have your oil, fuel and coolant lines in firesleeve. Usually if Evans burns it is already involved in a fire. There is a small chance if Evans where to hit a hot exhaust pipe in a small enough quantity then it might flame , but does not sustain a flame. IF it burst out all out once like splitting the line then it gets cooled below its ignition temp. So can Evans burn, yes, but so does everything else under the cowling. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. Some of us just can't dump enough heat from under the cowling to keep temps down. Some have very good cooling and Evans would be a very good choice. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. Ron Parigoris One other interesting fact is shooting oil on hot exhaust will catch fire at a lower temperature than 100LL! ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 09:24:34 AM PST US From: Arksey@aol.com Subject: RotaxEngines-List: Re: question regard oil mixture and temp. 503 I have a question regarding oil mixture 2 cycle for 503. I use Pennzoil 2 cycle air cooled pre mix at 50-1 ratio...my question is this....if a person increased the percentage of oil to the mixture and say ran a 40-1 ratio would the engine run cooler or would there be no change in engine temps? Reason for this question is that I have a friend who runs a 503 with oil injection and his temps run a bit high...he has carb set up correctly, checked everything we can think of, loaded the prop correctly and that is why I was wondering if his oil to gas mixture was correct and hence the question. His temps for both cht and egt are both in the high operating range. thanks in advance. It will run hotter as you continue to add more oil because the number one cooling before your air cooling is the fuel. You can add enough oil to seize an engine not to mention foul it badly. Remember Rotax has 20-30 years experience and the reason for most engine failures is the owner trying to be the Mfg or know more than all their millions spent testing and years of experience. You may however need to richen the fuel delivery in your case. Small adjustments will produce better and more accurate results. EGT's are usually controlled by fuel if everything else is as it is supposed to be. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. I believe the oil injection runs 50:1 at high throttle settings, but leans the mix out a bit at low throttle to idle, approaching 70:1. You don't need as much oil at the lower power settings. If you really want to debug the oil injection, you could try disabling it (i.e. pull out the plastic drive gear that fits into the end of the crank and plugging the intake ports) and running 50:1 premix. Too much oil leans the mixture as Roger says, because you have less fuel per unit and more oil. It's as bad as not enough oil.... I'm a retired HazMat Fire Captain of 28 yeas so the MSDS sheets have been a way of life. Evans: (boiling point 370F) Flash point 225F auto ignition 1054F Flammable limits 2.6 to 12.5% 100LL: Flash point -51F Auto ignition 840F Flammable limits 1.2 to 7% I'll take Evans over 100LL. There are way too many things that burn well and ignite well under the cowl to worry specifically about Evans. How many do a total rubber hose and rubber mount replacement every 5 years? -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az.
