LS,
I am pretty much of the same mindset as you are. I have looked everywhere
for 17mm ID heater hoses and have not found them here in the US. Even the
hose companies mentioned by some of the members, don't list them. I too will
reluctantly pay the $120 for two meters of this hose from the Rotax dealer.
I had thought about covering the hoses with fire sleeve where it comes in
close proximity to the muffler. What type of clamps are you using? The Corbin
(wire style) or the standard automotive gear style? Lockwood recommends the
Corbin but the parts book shows both and the prior owner of my engine used
the gear type.
Thanks,

Hi Dick
I am not flying with my 914 Europa yet, but have
silicone hoses for cooling and turbo intercooler.
I purchased
from a guy I think in Sweden, Europa has some custom needed hoses. I am
trying to use as many spring type clamps as possable.
Search
Silicone hoses:

McMaster has some spring clips:

also have a look at these places for hose and clips and other cooling
stuff:

BTW I purchased clip tool from McMaster, worth
it, a lot cheapier and hurts a lot less than loosing an eye.A lot of
energy in those clips once compressed.

Hi Dick,
Well, I'm probably going to let Rotax put it to me on this too and just get a set
of the Rotax spring clamps. I have the original clamps on there since the hoses
are from when the engine was new, but it occurs to me it's probably not a
good idea to reuse them.
I'm told the spring clamps are the only type you want to use here, so I'm erring
on the side of conservatism on that.
Going to be a bit expensive in the end, but hey, it always is.....

I bought silicone hoses from a truck parts house. I paid $5/FT for 1
foot but later decided to do the whole engine and I paid about $2/Ft for
a enough to finish.

COLD WEATHER STARTING
Dear ROAN subscriber,
A cold engine can be difficult to start. More importantly a cold engine start
can cause increased wear, damaging engine parts and reducing the longevity of
your engine. An important consideration during cold weather operation is engine
pre heating to prevent engine damage, increase engine longevity and reduce engine
overhaul costs.

p.s.
I have installed two of these and the customers are tickled pink. They got to start
their engine's at almost 85F on a 18F morning. They put them on a timer and
the plane was ready to go when they got to the hanger. Pretty easy to install,
too.
If anyone here is interested I may be able to help a little on the price.

Just wanted to update on the problem. I finally had a chance to run it yesterday
after gapping the plugs to 0.018". It seemed to run a tad smother but did not
help it gain any RPM. Last night I decided to swap carbs from left to right
and try the "three finger test" again. While I had the carbs off I decided to
pull all the jets and again verify the sizes. The sizes were all proper. I used
a magnifying glass to look carefully at each one. I could see light through
each jet when I held it up. before reassembling the carbs I took the main jet
and needle jet and gently inserted the needles into each jet just to see how far
they would go up the taper of the needle. One of the Main jets did not go as
far as the other. I gently twisted and heard (more like felt) a subtle snap.
The jet then slid up the needle as far as the other main jet would go. The best
way to describe it is there was a crust build up in side the jet. Prior to
this I did spray the jets out with carb cleaner but now I know that was not enough.
Took it out today and tied it down and got it to run up to 6200 RPM.
Thank you again for all the helpful suggestions.
