I have just be told of a fuel line hose called Barricade Fuel Hose. This
is
upposed to be a new product (at NAPA anyway) made by Gates and safe for us
e
ith fuel containing alcohol. Evidently it costs less than $2 per foot. Any
one
sing it?

Roger,
I have the old 80 hp with just the "dogs'. I don't have a friction torque
test as far as I know. There is no space between the "valley " of the dogs
(sounds like a movie) just two "V" ,s put together so no friction to check.
I believe that's on the 100 hp model.

Ira,
I attended the course at South Miss Light Aircraft with Ronnie Smith.( two
hour drive) Two years ago I attended Dean Vogels @ Lockwood. (superb !!)
This was a refresher course for me as I have much to do on my engine. I
attended the two day Service course which was an excellent fast paced review of
systems, oil changing, purging, carb syncing, etc. These courses add up to a bit
of cash so I did not take the Line Maint course again. I don't do this for a
living but want to stay "up to speed" on this engine.
Case in point, as many of you know, was my little piece on the Kiev prop.
I love it but could not get the necessary 5200 min static rpm out of it (per
the new Rotax service bulletin/instruction) and still have the cruise I
have with my Warp. Even though this prop is far smoother, easier on the gearbox
and nicer looking, it would not work on my 80 hp Rotax on my Kitfox.
Ronnie showed us a Rotax case with a crack in it which was a result of an
"overboost" .Rotax has since strengthen the cases. (after 2007 I believe)
I took copious notes during the course, as a lot of tips were being passed
around.
I also attended the two day two stroke course as I was curious about that
engine as we have one guy on our field who has one in a Challenger.(503)

There's no turbo so what is meant by "overboost"? Just curious.

Ok, so I'm impatient. I googled it.
Barricade is simply less permeable to gasoline vapor,
otherwise is simple R7 spec - the same as regular black
rubber hose but
it meets California Air Quality standards for pollution
No Steel braid, no built-on fire shield

I havn't been able to locate 17mm heater hose anywhere in America except
for Rotax
dealers, so naturally I'm highly interested in where you obtained it?...<
I am also in the process of replacing my hoses but I also could not find
any 17mm hose in the US . I finally bit the bullet and paid the money to
Lockwood and bought a 6 meter piece.
Today I am going to try and find the formed hose that goes from the spyder
to number three cylinder. That little jewell is almost $50 from Rotax. If I
can find this formed piece in 5/8 heater at NAPA, then 5/8 it will be.
I was able to find some CT wide band clamps at Grainger. It was about $6
for 10 of them vs $6 a piece at the Rotax dealer. These will replace my old
screw type which really chewed up the hoses
I am sure glad I started the hose replacement as they were real bad. This
job will certainly take awhile

While we all discuss fuel and oil hose it seems like a good time to ask what folks
are using for fire shields over these hoses? Some of the products advertised
by the aviation suppliers seem very expensive and it would be great if there
are some good yet less costly alternatives out there.

is reasonable alternative to the high cost 13mm oil hose available at aviation
supply websites, but hope that there is.

Barricade is a couple of years old and is promoted as a "green"
product because it has low permeance to fuel vapor. Otherwise
it seems to be the same spec as the standard gate 30R7 hose.
The Gates website did not mention any special resistance to abrasion,
heat, wear, etc. Like other Gates hose it is fine for E10. I don't
think we will be seeing anyone using E85 in aircraft now or in the
future due to the low energy density and the high vapor pressure.

Depending on where and what size you buy fire sleeve can be $3-$5 per ft. All the
fuel lines and oil lines in an engine compartment should be sleeved. The sleeves
should have clamps on each end and they should really be dipped in a fire
sleeve sealer like "End Dip". This keeps the sleeving from wicking up fuel or
oil inside the sleeve to burn. That stuff is about $150 a quart. These fire
sleeves depending on what you buy are good up to 2000 degrees. You are never thankful
to have something that protects you until you need it and it has never
happened to me before until the first time.
As a 28 year fireman I wish I had a quarter for every person that said "That has
never happened before".
