Some have inferred that you must do this every time before starting the engine to assure proper lubrication through out the engine. My interpretation of the Rotax instructions on page 10-15 of their Operation Manual is that this is to assure that you have the correct oil level in the tank, and for no other reason. It's a dry sump system with no scavenge pump to empty out the crankcase. When you listen for the burp you're verifying that the engine is sealed so that there are no leaks to keep this from working.
