Carl,
This is a fairly common problem with the Rotax tach. It can often be cured
by placing a 300 ohm resister across two of the terminals. There is a Rotax
service letter on the subject.

Hey guys,
I tore my engine down for a sprag clutch replacement last Winter.
Everything is running top notch now, except this damn tachometer. It reads
steady from 0 to 4k, then beyond that it runs straight to 7k. Literally, I
can move the throttle 1 mm past the 4k point and WHAM, 7k. The engine
sounds perfectly normal, so I'm sure it's not actually at 7k (pretty sure it
would tear itself apart and make one hell of a racket). Any ideas? It's a
Rotax 912 ULS on a Kitfox 5 .. and I'm stumped. Anybody run into this
before? Thanks!
Carl

Carl,
I had the same problem and it required a resistor on the ground line. I
forgot the resistance required, but it solved the problem. I verified the
reading was correct using a prop tach.

Sounds like a westach which is supposed to read the pulses in the tach
line...Problem seems to be the voltage on the tach line isn't stable it
increases with rpm.
The best bet for you would be to get either a mechanical tack ( expensive )
or a digital tiny tach that picks up impulses to the spark plugs... be
aware there are several different models of Tiny Tach so be sure to get the
right one for your engine.

OK my next problem.
You folks have always come to my rescue in previous jams. I am sending this
to several "lists" in hopes of getting some help. BTW there ares at least
two other projects in our local area that will be in the same predicament.
After three years of building and anticipating the sign-off of my Kit Built
Zenith CH 701 I find that the DAR that I spoke with three years ago who did
inspections in our area - Boise ID / Twin Falls ID - has hung up his hat and
no longer does the airworthiness inspections.
I looked - cursory glance - at the EAA list of inspectors and the closest
three I could find were: Salt Lake City Utah area, Eastern Oregon and
Montana - all some distance away.
I have been told, but not checked, the FAA office in Boise does not do the
inspection due to lack of time and also not the proper credentials.
What to do, what to do - I should be ready in a matter of weeks. Any ideas
of DAR volunteers that would like to make a nice trip to sunny southern
Idaho, would offer the possibility of great home cooked meals, lodging,
golf, trout fishing just about anything to get this done expeditiously.
Your thoughts please, drop an email or give me a call.

Hi Phil,
A few years back I used to own a two seat Kolb MarkIII. I made it into an ELSA.
There were no DARS in Arizona for this. It was just too new. I found a guy in
San Diego and flew him out for the day for the inspection. It really wasn't that
bad of an expense. Southwest round trip, plus his normal fee. You may want
to consider this option. It is a one time expense and may not be a s bad as you
think.

Phil
I can sympathize with your situation. I would contact the FAA in
Oklahoma for more information regarding the obligations of your local
FSDO office. If I am not mistaken if there are no DAR's within a
reasonable distance the FSDO office may be obligated to give you a free
inspection. Hope this helps.

Brian,
Thanks, I found the service bulletin. Not sure which tach I've got, will have
to check Monday. I don't recall seeing a resistor on the stator the last time
I tore the engine apart, so I'm thinking it's the "new" type with the integrated
resistor. Which makes me think the tach is broken ..
Noel,
I checked out the tiny tach website .. it looks like all these little guys do is
count ignition pulses, and the number of pulses/rev can be programmed. Seems
to me any one of them would work .. right?

I don't know why but the Rotax tach pulses seem to be a problem for many
tachs. I have changed a couple that would not respond to the resistor "fix"
and found that the UMA tach specifically programmed for the Rotax 912 works
very well.
Regards
Brian
