Subject: | Re: rough running at 3400 RPM and above |
Hello Rotax owners.
My friend is also experiancing rough running on his Rotax 912 ul and has done all
kinds of adjustments, replacing carb parts and cleaning, but is tearing the
engine off to look at the electrical system. His plane is a Kitfox and the engine
is to close to the firewall to do any inspection on the megnetos and ignition
system.
We were wondering if anyone has replaced the spark plug wires without replacing
the ignition coils? Are the wires screwed into the coils or glued?
Thanks,
Johann G.

Doug ,
Have you done a mag check? I had a rough runner and it showed up in the mag check.
After much work, frustration, etc I called Ronnie Smith at South Mississippi
Light Aircraft and he suggested I check the red power lead to the coils for a
break. I used a sewing pin with an ohm meter andattached one lead to the pin
(the other to ground). By penetrating the plastic shielding of the wire I worked
my way back along the wire and sure enough I found the break along a flat run.
It was totally invisible from looking at it. With a cut and splice, I was
back in business.
You could call Ronnie. He is very helpful and sure knows these engines!

I need to pull the gear box from my 912ULS to have it checked out after
a prop strike. I have removed the 10 (or is it 8) smaller bolts, and the
two larger ones at the bottom.
The forward case doesn't seem to want to move...a few genle taps with a
rubber hammer didn't do anything, so it seems I need information.
How do you 'pull' the gear box? Force? Some special puller tool? What?

You really need the gear puller that's available for that gearbox. Hammer on it,
and you might crack something. Piece of cake with the puller.

John,
Go to my Europa Owners Gallery. You should see an album concerning the Lockwood
9XX School. Click on the album and then go to page 4. Toward the top of the
page there are a couple pictures concerning removal of the gearbox.
Yes, there is a special tool made for gearbox removal.
Good luck,

And don't forget to consult the 912 maintenance manual(s). They usually have decent
descriptions of how to remove things like this. You'll certainly want to
consult it when you re-install the gearbox too, so you have the torque values,
and know the proper flange sealant to use when reassembling the gear box.

Here is an inexpensive homemade gearbox puller.
The cost for a gearbox inspection including parts is about $450 and if the shaft
is bent past the acceptable limits then that is another $640. About 70% of the
shaft flanges are bent, just many people never bother to check it or know how
to check it.

Hi John,
rotaxowner.com has video on how to remove and install (with the proper
sealant) your gearbox. You can make a tool from a cheap slide hammer and
fabricated bolt on fixture that Roger showed in a photo.
