Hello Collin: 1 - Fuses do NOT protect the equipment they protect the wires. 2 - What voltage regulator do you have that does not require a ballast, load or battery? 3 - I WOULD NOT - go directly to the radio equipment. Use some SMALL battery if weight is an issue. Dear Barry, Thank you for the reply, I have a 264 870 regulator. The operators manual has a circuit in it show a non battery schematic? It's page 20 - 1994. Is this possible please? Colin, Take a look at the Installation Manual section 18.5.2, figure 42, page 18.5. The 264 870 regulator is described as "not limited to minimum 1 ampere consumption", not that it can be run without something to smooth the electrical output of the alternator. This is the purpose of the capacitor o r battery. If weight is an issue, use the capacitor. If you think you might want to run your equipment without the engine running, use the battery. The cap should be an electrolytic type and you must take care to make sure it is correctly connected. If you wire it wrong it WILL go bang! Also, if you disconnect it after it has been charged, be sure to discharge it. A capacitor can hold a charge for months. If you go with a battery, make sure you take note of the minimum capacity ( 9 AH ). As far as fusing the equipment goes, use the manufacturers recommendations. Hello Collin: I took a LQQK at the web site with the voltage regulators. * * *http://www.challengers101.com/RotaxChargeSys.html Your regulator: 264 870***** * * The do show three configurations. 1 - Without a battery - But, it does nave a ballast - The 2,000 uF Cap. I do not care for this type of system in that you are relying on an electrolytic capacitor to do your filtering and load regulation. They d o fail due to heat and life expediency. And when they fail YOU WILL NOT KNOW IT... until your radios die and smoke. 2 - Regulator with a battery - MUCH BETTER and if you want additional filtering you can put the 2,000 uF Cap in parallel with the battery. If th e Cap fails... So What! The battery is still there. 3 - This set up is dependent upon IF YOU have a Starter with your plane. I f so.... It makes perfectly good sense to use it. ALSO NOTE: The minimum size of the Battery is 9 AH for system #2 and 16 AH for system #3. If you have the room and can handle the weight - This is one time BIGGER is BETTER. Barry, Weight and room is a big problem here, I will be on limit. I will use a pull starter. I guess I could make a Voltage regulator system using passive devices, but is that what the Rotax unit does anyway? The Radio is portable, therefore has its own battery, and so does the GPS, It is a Garmin 296. Colin: Than go with option #2. You would want some sort of backup for the radio and GPS. Use a small Battery - A 9 AH would be about 4x4x5" and could fit almost anywhere. Under a seat, in a small box mounted to the firewall (inside or out), or even in a hanging pocket on the back of a seat. It will supply you with more than enough power for a HT & GPS. With the HT... What also is important is your antenna. Was running low and had to top it off with the green stuff. Now what? I'm reading that this can cause some serious corrosion issues. Been in the engine for about 2-3 months now. Didn't think it would be a big deal, argh! Carl Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=315447#315447

Hi Carl It really depends on the type of antifreeze you used, most ethylene glycol types are mixable but the corrosion inhibitors could be compromised, A few months shouldn=92t be a problem, just drain down and replace soonest, What concerns me more is the need to top up in the first place, My cooling system hasn=92t needed topping up in three years, I will be changing the antifreeze this year before the inhibitors become totally exhausted, I would pressure test the cooling system for leaks and look for orange/blue/green/purple/red ( pick your colour) stains anywhere The water pump is a good place to start, Ivor On 12 October 2010 19:18, cschmokel <cschmokel@gmail.com> wrote: > > > Was running low and had to top it off with the green stuff. Called a guy at Lockwood and he said the same thing. No big deal, just flush at soonest convenience. As to why it needs topping off .. I replaced the sprag clutch on my 912 last Winter and I'm slowly weeping fluid. Haven't been able to nail it down. I think it may be the pump housing .. I occasionally see just a little bit of moisture down there, but I could never be too sure since it is one of the lowest points on the engine and could just be dripping from higher up. I talked to a guy at the airport who used to own a Kitfox 4 with a 912 and he says he was never able to nail down every radiator leak in his plane. With all the hoses, something is bound to leak, so he says. How do you recommend pressure testing the radiator? A better way to find the leak is to get a bottle of phosphorescent dye made for just this kind of leak detection. I used it on my 582 system and it worked like a charm. All you need is an ultraviolet bulb for a drop light and a dark hangar and you'll find your leak in no time. I found the dye at O'reilly's Auto Supply. It was about $5.
