I use the spot tracker myself. a most reliable tool. only drawback is the 10 min
interval. it always draws a straight line between . so in you are doing some
out and back or circles. they don't show up. question. why the northerly arch
to the path. you seem to be following the road. the map show just a gray area.
what is this. high terrain? restricted space?

Ross,
I checked the VFR Chart using AirNav.com and those areas to the south of the course
are Restricted Areas and Military Operating Areas. Not to mention they are
nasty desert basin and range where you would not want to have to set down and
wait for help. Better to follow the road and take a longer way around.

The Spot locator is pretty cool, and cheap. But how does it know you
have crashed? Don't you have to activate the emergency locate feature
manually? I can think of a lot of scenarios where you wouldn't have
time or would fail to remember while the S*** was hitting the fan!
I just moved my Sky Ranger to another airport in Montana, and flew
over the continental divide near Glacier Park. Rough country, to say
the least!! The 80 hp 912 doesn't mind 10,000 feet in the least.

I don't know if you are supposed to use it on 912 series engines, but I jus
t bought a can of Sta-Bil fogging oil from my local Auto Zone for under $6.
- The clerk told me that some stores have it, and they had just got it in
.

Subject: | Re: oil temp question 912 80 hp |
Hi again group,
on the 912 80 hp operating in this cool weather we are having trouble
with oil temp being to low...i know you can tape the oil cooler to raise the
temp of which we did, but we are reading oil temp on a EIS and it seemed to
be jumping back and forth and not steady on a temp after doing
this....also we have no temp probe on the coolant and therefore without one I
do not
feel like we should tape the coolant radiator....suggestions
please.....thanks .....Jim

Roger,
Someone has already mentioned this but, SPOT is a near copy of APRS
- amateur radio reprting system, developed by W4APR which does about the
same thing for RadioAmateurs starting about ten years ago. he placed a
satellite reporting module in the accompanying car to the US Navy carrying
the football from Annapolis to West Point for the annual Army-Navy football
game. We were impressed.
The next year he had miniaturised the module so that it sat in the
footballer's Hat!
That precipitated all these pachage company trucks sending their
position to company HQ regularly (and telling the boss when they were
still!!)
Since then a number of hams have used it to send their position home
to the computer for record keeping. You can see this on www.APRS.org. Like
Spot, thing is, where the dots stop is where the prang is.
Interesting,
Ferg

Hi Jim,
Don't worry too much over the water temp as it is very close to the CHT since that
is where the water runs through. If the oil temp looks like a ping pong ball,
first check the wire connection on the sensor and make sure it is tight. The
oil temp hopping around is usually a bad contact or wire connection.

Hi Jack,
The Spot can send a couple of different messages. Yes the button has to be pushed
for them, but if all else fails and the big heart attack hits and you can't
push the button to summon help then the little flagged locator's will be all
in the same place and at least someone will know where you are. I think most times
most people will be able to push the button.

I would have flown through those restricted areas, but I couldn't get clearance.
It is fairly flat terrain with a little mountain here and there. It looks like
I flew the road because that is where I-8 is, but I was just trying to stay
a little north of the restricted areas in reality.
