I used to have to tape my oil cooler and radiator in the winter and fall. I bought a oil thermostat from Lockwood and it keeps my oil temp right at around 200f. From: Arksey@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, October 27, 2010 12:45 PM Subject: RotaxEngines-List: Re: oil temp question 912 80 hp Hi again group, on the 912 80 hp operating in this cool weather we are having trouble with oil temp being to low...i know you can tape the oil cooler to raise the temp of which we did, but we are reading oil temp on a EIS and it seemed to be jumping back and forth and not steady on a temp after doing this....also we have no temp probe on the coolant and therefore without one I do not feel like we should tape the coolant radiator....suggestions please.....thanks .....Jim Do not archive FIRESTAR ll 503 Michigan jswan GPS FOR MY RUNWAY N 42 deg 28.581 W084deg 44.825 ph. 517-663-8488

Jim, The only other thing I see that might be useful is to spray the carb inlets with oil mist during shutdown of the engine. This was recommended during one of my Lockwood engine courses. Pennzoil makes such a product and it comes in a spray can.(probably need 2 cans) The oil will coat the engine cylinders, valves, carb interior, etc. As I am in Florida I can fly all year BUT my Triumph TR3 sports car is in NC (where I am today). I intend on doing the same procedure to it in a few hours. I will run the engine with the carb filters off and then spray oil mist into each SU carb to kill the engine then leave the car till late spring driving weather when I return to the mountains. Sta-bil should be added to any remaining gasoline(again recommended Rotax proceedure) if you don't drain it. Dick Maddux 912UL Milton,Fl

To keep the oil temp up in cold weather, you need to install one of the oil system thermostats sold by Lockwood. They are not too difficult to install, and it keeps the oil temp up to the minimum of 180 F. Get one, they're foolproof, and necessary if you fly in the cold north!
