Subject: | Contributions Down By 17%... |
Dear Listers,
As of today, Contributions to the Matronics List Fund Raiser are lagging behind
last year at this time by roughly 17%. I have a Fund Raiser each year simply
to cover my operating costs for the Lists. I *do not* accept any advertising
income to support the Lists and rely solely on the Contributions of members to
keep the expenses paid.
I run all of my own servers and they are housed here locally, and the Internet
connection is a commercial-grade, T1 connection with public address space. I
also maintain a full backup system that does nightly backups of all List-related
data so that in the event of a server crash or worse, all of the Lists and
the many years of List archive data could be restored onto a new server in a matter
of hours.
All of this costs a fair amount of money, not to mention a significant amount of
my personal time. I have a Fund Raiser each year to cover these costs and I
ask that members that feel they receive a benefit from my investments make a
modest Contribution each year to support the continued operation and upgrade of
these services.
If you enjoy the Lists, please make a Contribution today. I also offer some incentive
gifts for larger Contribution levels. At the Contribution Web Wite, you
can use a credit card, Paypal, or personal check to show your support for the
continuation of these services:

Johann, check to make sure that the enrichener arms are seating correctly in the
off position. I had a similar issue with my engine. Ine of the gurus from
Lockwood pointed out to me that since the enrichener circuit is not a choke, it
actually causes a LEAN condition at higher RPMs.

Hi Guys. I'm finishing up my fuel system and had the opportunity to try out my
Facet fuel pump. Sounds like a hammering noise. Are they all this noisy or is
it just meGeoff

Did you bleed the system of air? If the pump is pumping air it will be more noisy.
It may also make a little more noise with no flow going on.

Subject: | I can't burp the oil tank on my 912 UL. Could use some |
help
Hey guys.
I'm not flying yet, in fact I have not started the engine yet (912 UL). I've been
neglecting it and concentrating on the building. Now I find that I cannot 'burp'
the oil tank . The oil level in the tank has been real low but I know that
it was high at one time because I'm the one that filled it. I know it just
ran down into the crankcase. So I hand propped it again no end of times. No 'burp'
and the oil level would not come up. So I broke the connection under the
engine and ran all the oil down into a clean plastic coffee can. I got slightly
over half a can, about a quart. I re connected the crankcase plug and poured
the retrieved oil into the tank. Dip the tank and its at FULL level. I let it
sit for 2 days and then Hand propped it over 10 full revolutions. Still nothing.
During the 2 days, some of the oil should have leaked into the crankcase.
Have I got an airlock somewhere thats preventing the oil from pumping back to
the tank? I'd appreciate some adviceGeoff

Yes there could be air in the system. This is the first time use and its exhibiting
"flow" peculiarities even though it looks like a simple downhill route. My
plans are circa 1990's. Small wing tanks hold about 6 gallon each and feed a
5 gallon header tank. The wing tanks are not hooked up yet. I'm probably jumping
the gun here. I should wait untill the wing are permanently on. Typically
these 3 tank systems have always had problems with flow. It looks like a "no brainer"
liquid running downhill but then it goes back uphill to fill the header
tank. From THERE it could be a "no brainer" downhill route to the engine. The
pump in the photo is not my boost pump . It is my Transfer pump. Its used to
start the flow if necessary. I'm going to shelve this for now and pick it up
again when the wings are on. playing with it now may be futile. Thanks anyway

I had exactly the opposite problem once in a SeaRey used for transition training
that had been parked outdoors for several years. SeaReys have the throttle springs
reversed, so that the spring pulls the throttle closed, not open. The reasoning
for this is that the throttle cables (which are pull-only) are much less
likely to fail than the springs. When I throttled back on downwind one day,
the engine wouldn't go to idle--kept running at about half power. The remedy
was easy: switch the engine off and land dead-stick, then re-start to taxi in.
The problem was that one spring had broken during the flight. So I got a little
bonus training that day. And I was thankful that the cables, not the springs,
were set to pull the throttles open.

Subject: | Re: I can't burp the oil tank on my 912 UL. Could |
use some help
Geoff,
In my Europa installation the oil reservoir has to be mounted slightly higher than
the 914's crankcase. Because of this, some oil works its way back into the
crankcase over time. The more oil in the crankcase, the more revs needed to
blow it out. I generally find that the oil level before burp is down almost
1/2 quart (~1/2 liter) before I do the burp. In my case it may take 15 or 20
revolutions of the prop to blow all the oil from the crankcase and get a satisfying
burp. After burp, it is back to close to the full level. Remember, you
are using piston blow-by to pressure the crank case and push out the oil. There
isn't a whole lot of blow by volume from one compression stroke so it's going
to take a fair number of compressions to get sufficient pressure/volume to
displace the oil. Don't give up, just keep flipping blades and you'll get your
burp.
Check six,
Bob Borger

if you are sure of your hose connections to the tank. just keep flipping the prop.
if you just keep spinning it over it will take 20 or more.... i usually turn
trough 1 or 2 fins then bring up to compression on the next and hold there
for 3 or 4 seconds then next fin to compression hold there for 3 to 5 sec. repeat
this and you can burb sooner with less rotations. give time for the air
to blead by the rings on a new tight engine

I'm back to admit my sin. I was doing all this with one plug removed from each
cylinder. Bob Borger just straightened me out and do I feel dumb.
Moving on, if I may. Ross I'll try the hold method that you're talking about. It
sounds less strenuous. Even with the plugs out it was killing me.Geoff

Hello Geoff.
I have this setup in my plane and it works very well. I only have a fuel gauge
in the header tank and some clear tubes in the fuel lines coming from the wings
to the Andair fuel valve. This way I know when the wing tanks are empty. My
fuel transfere pump makes this rattleing sound but does not effect me because
the sound of the engine drowns that out when I have to use the transfere pump.
The pump has been in the plane for 5 years. I am very happy with this setup.
