Subject: | Storing and laying up a Rotax 912S |
Hi,
I could do with some advice about storing an engine. I'm in the middle of a aircraft
build which will take a few more years yet. I did plan to buy a new Rotax
912S when the time comes but with the rising VAT rate and euro exchange here
in the UK, it's looking more likely that I'll source one second hand.
I've seen a few good engines advertised that are low hours and in good condition.
I could buy one now and store it or I could wait until nearer the time when
I'm ready and hope a decent one comes up.
My question is, what are the issues or implications of storing a Rotax 912S for
2 -3 years ? I think there is a procedure for laying up an engine but I can't
find this anywhere.
Any comments?
Thanks,
Phil

There's two places I can see, where Rotax talks about how to preserve an engine:
(1) Operator manual, section 8.1
http://www.rotax-aircraft-engines.com/portaldata/5/dokus/d04670.pdf
(2) Heavy Maintenance manual, section 5.2

By the way, any idea what they mean by "corrosion inhibiting oil"? I.e. what oil
should be used for this? Just curious...

Despite the anti-corrosive oil, you will
burn up your warranty in storage.

Sure they did it for the wrong reasons, but Im not going to turn it down - we need
all the help we can get even if it's an accident.
Maybe if 100LL really does die (which I doubt) and gets replaced with an unleaded
alternative, this may partially go away. I.e. we'll be able to use whatever
the new avgas is and not have to mess with mogas if we don't want to (or can't
afford the unleaded avgas, etc)....

Bob,
According to a seminar I heard from the Lockwood people @ Oshkosh, Rotax
engines wear out just sitting. That is, seals and gaskets go bad. It
is a consideration.

That is true. The manuals talk about when an overhaul must be done (engine running
time, elapsed time since last overhaul)

There are a lot of engines in the wings. The rotax is way too expensive and
alternatives are coming on strong, plus projects and marriages take longer
and end sooner than we think and the engine will age in storage... my 2$ Ray

I'm with Ray on this one. save the money and put it into whats needed now. the
warranty will be a big thing in your future. and improvements are being made
on new rotax... and other engines constantly.
if you must there are many views on the topic on pickling engines. years ago we
would pickle car and truck engines by coating the outside of engine with grease
and wrap in burlap and fasten to a skid so in would be protected somewhat.
carbs would be remove and immersed in clean gas and sealed tight, not too long
here as gas does varnish with age. all orifices of engine are sealed with
plates or caps.. then the entire engine is filled with oil... filled!..., crankcase,
heads, jugs, valve covers, water jackets. then set in a dry elevated if
possible place. an engine will sit for a very long time in this condition. it
will take some cleaning and flushing but will be in great shape when you are
ready. for what is worth my $.02 Ross
