Ferg=0AI would not use WD40, it allegedly degrades to leave silicon oxide (

Hi Fergus,
I'm not exactly sure why someone needs to use WD40 to remove a hose then put it
back on unless they just needed to replace a part? Yes hoses can be re-used if
they are in good shape, not damaged by the removal or past a time limit. I am
with Graham that WD40 should not be used on rubber parts. It was designed to
be a water displacement and a penetrant. It can cause some degradation over time
and or constant exposure. When I used to Mfg. dive compressors we always recommend
to never use WD40 because of the issue on the rubber parts over time,
plus it will creep, seep and wick where you really didn't want it to go, AKA
in your breathing air. It is a good product when it is used for its correct intended
purposes. I haven't ever needed anything to remove a Rotax hose other than
a little pulling or a twist motion. There are products out there meant for
rubber, but I don't think I would use WD40 on purpose or in any repeated fashion.
If it was an over spray issue and wouldn't sweat it, but I wouldn't use it
on a regular basis. I know there are people out there that would swear it is
the best thing since sliced bread on rubber, but they really should do some good
research first and not listen to their neighbor.

(Of course when this fails get the hammer)
By the way WD40 got its name when the company that developed it tried many formulas
and stuck with the 40th. chemical blend during its development.

On a different note:
I read a few months back a scientific study on Mystery Marvel Oil. Actually there
are more than one. I have heard the claims of many about how it was the greatest
thing since we have been able to walk upright. Many use it when they burn
100LL. People add it to their fuel and their oil with all kinds of claims. They
all swear and would fight you to the grave about how well it stops leading
and how it will make an engine run like a top until the next ice age. The study
actual found out all the chemicals used, nothing more than lubricants, and
they found over long term studies that there is no scientific proof that is does
anything. It's been around since 1923 and it would takes weeks to see all the
post on the web about it. I tend to go with science most of the time since
my neighbor never did a long term fact based study. It may have been a better
product back in the early days when our engines weren't as sophisticated as they
are today and a little more lube in certain areas did help?
p.s.
I don't really know why I wrote this post? Maybe I was bored. Maybe WD40 got me
going. Who knows. :D

Roger and Fergus:
When I use to service high pressure air compressors for human consumption
(SCUBA) and use same (SCUBA) or test operations the rule is NEVER to use
PETROLEUM products for lubrication. NOT because of the rubber or silicon,
but because of instantiation combustion and the possibility
of lymphoid pneumonia. Just as you do not use oil on oxygen tanks or
service you do not use petroleum on high pressure air. A little thing
related to Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures.
