Hello Dave, Does your 582 have the double jointed exhaust bend on it? The earlier
one piece ones could set up a resonant vibration which could split the silencer
and so obviously put strain on the manifold studs and flanges. I have used
socket head capscrews on my manifold and with a bit of grinding the top of the
head have managed to get all 8 in. You have to put two of the screws in before
offering the manifold up and run them in bit at a time with a ball wrench
but i am happier with the result although there is always a small amount of black
oil around it which this wipes of easily with a bit of fuel on a rag, I think
the gaskets are a bit porous and running rich as we do there will be some
oily vapour in the exhaust.
Regards, john.

A sudden storm took visitors to the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In by surprise Thursday
morning, when an unexpected tornado did millions of dollars worth of damage.
The roof of a youth activity center on the Sun 'n Fun campus has collapsed;
early reports indicate as many as 70 people may be trapped inside, and
rescue efforts are currently underway. AVweb staffers are currently working
to ascertain the nature and extent of the devastation.

I am surprised that no one has responded with the solution. I have
taken Bob Robertson's (Light Engine Services) Rotax Two Stroke
Service/Maintenance Course a couple of times. (It is fantastic; a
must for anyone who operates a two stroke!).
I had the same problem on my 503 and then on my 582. The solution is:
First make sure your cylinders are on square (straight). Rotax has a
straight edge tool that is to be used when torquing down the
cylinders. Then use new gaskets. This alone will not fix the problem.
The problem is when the new exhaust manifold heats and cools, it
changes shape.. The exhaust flange faces become out of plane (not
parallel) as a result of the heating and subsequent warping of the
exhaust manifold. This is what causes the exhaust leak/slobbering.
The answer is simply take the exhaust manifold off and plane it down
parallel. The easiest way to use a belt sander and sand it down until
the surfaces are all touching. You could also put some sand paper
down on a flat surface like a table saw and sand the exhaust manifold
flange surface by hand. A little care and common sense will yield
good results.
Most of the Rotax 2 strokes in our club had this problem until a few
us took the course. Since then everyone has fixed the problem by
doing this simple fix.
Good Luck,
Joe
