Hello Guys
My Model 5 Vixen has separate mag (module) switches. My normal start-up
procedure is to leave the switches OFF and crank the starter a few seconds
to bring up full oil pressure. I then turn on the switches and start-up. My
thinking here is that the engine will have lubrication before it runs at
2000 or so RPM. I have been doing that now for about 100 hours. This should
not affect the diodes as long as the modules are OFF, right. Anyone care to
comment on this

OK, I'm slow - but what did you use to remove the installed oil
filter on your 914? It's ti-ight.
It's been on for some time and I had a proper strap wrench but
cannot find it - and, apparently nobody makes cloth strap wrenches in my
part of spaceship Earth* any more. They're all made of rubber bands which
snap at first try......
Your creative solutions most humbly accepted.

Don, the key is that the ignition is grounded, so no problem with your
startup method.
Here is where the real problem comes. Trying to diagnose an engine that
won't start, pulling a plug and trying to ground it on the head to see if
there's a spark. This may have worked for your Grandpa's 52 Chevy six, but
it's a real bad idea for any Rotax with the electronic ignition. First, the
spark is so weak that you probably won't be able to see it. Second, if you
don't get a good ground, that little diode has to take all that energy
instead. That's where you really put the ignition module at risk.

I-would suggest-that most normal engine wear occurs in the short interv
al between engine start-up and point where oil pressure climbs to normal le
vel.- Modern day lubricants flow much better than those available from de
cades past.- I am not concerned with engine start-ups whether winter or s
ummer as I use a permanent Teflon resin engine coating that I have over 25
years experience with.- That experience involved destructive engine testi
ng and included tracking engine wear progress with oil analysis.- I have
a history of keeping my autos for several hundred thousand miles before ret
irement.- With the exception of 2 cycle engines I treat 4 cycle and diese
l engines including my Rotax 912 with Slick 50 engine treatment.- I have
never seen any engine additive endorsed by any engine manufacturer.- Ther
e is a considerable amount of negative press on the Internet by so-called e
ngine experts about Slick 50.- None of the opinions offered that I have s
een
indicated that my efforts to test the product were duplicated by any of th
em.- I can be reached by telephone (630-514-5696) should anyone wish to e
ngage in further discussion of this product that I regard as engine insuran
ce.

William and Ivor,
Thank you both for rapid weekend replies....
Fact is, after a week of searching the hawkers, I tripped over my
afore-mentioned cloth strap wrench, applied same and after some invective
managed a grudging move - so I'm OK Jack. But it was not without some
wrangling and am thankful for your solutions. These may come in handy later.
The thing is - I have not replenished the oil for a couplke of years
- it has been in the spare bedroom and dry - and I want to remove the filter
only to replenish the unused oil, so filter destruction not wanted.
I now turn my attention to filling the oil according to the Rotax
persuasion and discover I have badly sited various components unknowingly
frustrating the ucoupling of hoses in the 914's dark interior spaces.
Nothing seems easy.
Cheers, and I owe you
Ferg
PS: It appears I owe so many of the hops variety I'll have to come over for
the Christmas dinner to comply with glib promises.

Peter,
?
I am reluctant to even suggest anything since yours is a new installation,
but is it possible that there could be any
obstruction of air flow into the turbo, or a problem with a sensor(?) that
might trigger the wastegate opening as if
there was a partial airflow?blockage??
?
I had a similar occurence with mine, but found that my turbo's air filter
needed cleaning and reoiling.? O.K. after that.
?

Subject: RotaxEngines-List: Re: TLR46a TCU Program
From: "pestar" <peter@reivernet.com>
Update
Used conventional PC with straight cable to the TCU - no problems. Am
retrieving
data from the TCU. throttle position sensor fine 1.2% to 115% as per book
.
The reason I wanted to look at this data is that I can only obtain 33PSI
manifold
pressure at 5700 because the wastegate is opening towards maximum throttle
.
This is the reason I cannot obtain the required manifold pressure.
I am going to run a log and copy this and the retrieved data and sent it
to our
Rotax distributor. I have been in contact with him to review this problem
.
I made the following observation with the engine NOT running, stats off th
e
program
and confirmed by visual observation . At 0 position throttle wastegate is
100%, as you move the throttle up to 115% the wastegate moves to 75%.
Is this behaviour that others with a 914 have noticed. I appreciate that
with
the engine not running the TCU may require other inputs but as a casual
observation
I would have thought that the wastegate would not have moved.
I am going to sit the old PC in the rear seats and run the engine up and
see
what
happens in operational mode.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers Peter

PS Now need to look for an acceptable USB to serial cable that works with
this
program, anyone any ideas.
